In this tale set against the sun-baked backdrop of 1830 Andalusia, the French writer Prosper Mérimée crosses paths with a notorious fugitive, José. José is condemned to death by garroting, and as the noose of fate looms, Mérimée visits him in his prison cell the day before the execution. From behind iron bars, José begins to unfold the story of a life shaped by obsession, danger, and a consuming love that will redefine him forever.

José Lizarrabengoa is introduced as a stern, proper Basque sergeant stationed in Córdoba, where a cigar factory sits beside his military HQ. There, the factory’s star is Carmen: a sultry, half-gypsy woman whose beauty is matched only by a tempestuous temper. Carmen’s dangerous charm catches the eye of many, including Fernanda, a fellow worker whose outspoken accusations spark a cutting feud. In a moment of reckoning, Fernanda is slapped by Carmen, a brutal act that seals their fates and lands Carmen in prison—while José, tasked with her custody, feels the sting of duty colliding with desire. During the transport to captivity, Carmen ensnares him with a reckless promise: a single night of shared passion in exchange for his help escaping. José’s jealousy boils, yet he knows that confrontation with Tuerto could be mortal, so he keeps his temper—and his distance.

With Carmen’s influence, José’s prowess grows, and the band’s fortunes rise and fall as clashes with authorities continue. In a moment of fevered passion and bent morals, he and Carmen orchestrate the murder of El Tuerto, severing a dangerous tie that could have undone them both. Yet as Carmen’s allure lures another suitor into the fold, Lucas, a bold matador, José’s possessive obsession intensifies. When he discovers Carmen in bed with Lucas, his rage erupts into violence: he kills the bullfighter and flees the scene, leaving a bloody wake behind him.

Trapped in the hollow quiet of an empty church, José confronts Carmen. She appears unrepentant, claiming she no longer loves him, and dares him to end her life. The moment of tenderness flickers as they kiss, but the bitter undertow of jealousy and betrayal proves stronger: José destroys Carmen with a knife, sealing a tragic arc of passion that could not survive the weight of deceit and desire.
