In 2019, the city of Chicago is plunged into chaos as martial law is declared due to an extraterrestrial invasion. The Drummond family faces the horror when they realize all exits are blocked and must find a way to escape the calamity unfolding around them.

After a harrowing attempt to escape, the Drummond family makes it through one barricade, only to find themselves trapped in a tunnel. Tragically, the aliens attack swiftly, vaporizing the parents and leaving their two sons unharmed but traumatized.

Fast forward to nine years later, humanity is now under the dominion of the aliens, referred to as 'The Legislators'. Societal structures have crumbled, and humans are forced into underground 'Closed Zones', cut off from the city above.

Gabriel Drummond, the younger son of the family, struggles to survive in the impoverished neighborhood of Pilsen. His life takes a turn when he meets Commander William Mulligan, who holds a connection to his past and the resistance fight.

In a chance encounter, Gabriel interacts with a Phoenix member while selling a hand-rolled cigarette. This meeting sets him on a path that reconnects him with his brother Rafe, the leader of the resistance.

Rafe warns Gabriel about a planned attack on the Unity Rally at Soldier Field. The urgency of the situation escalates as Gabriel realizes the importance of the cigarette containing vital information for the resistance.

As Gabriel attempts to deliver critical information for the Phoenix group, he is confronted by Mulligan, who has been watching him closely. Gabriel cleverly escapes a potentially deadly encounter, seeking refuge underground.

During the anticipated Unity Rally at Soldier Field, Rafe and the Phoenix group launch a bold assault on alien dignitaries. The attack momentarily appears successful, but citywide lockdowns ensue, as the authorities react swiftly.

In the aftermath of the attack, heightened police presence begins to sweep through the city. Personal losses mount as Rafe is shot and captured, while resistance members Anita is vaporized, and Daniel chooses suicide over capture.

Gabriel is arrested during a police raid, where Mulligan uses a cruel tactic to pressure him into sending a message to the leadership of Phoenix. The stakes rise as Gabriel is forced to navigate the treacherous world of human-alien relations.

Gabriel's search leads him to Jane Doe, a brothel owner who has ties to the resistance. Their brief interaction is marred by chaos as a police raid ensues, resulting in Jane's tragic death and Gabriel's realization of the danger surrounding him.

The investigation into Jane's activities uncovers her efforts in documenting sensitive information related to the Special Branch. This information is crucial for the resistance but places everyone involved in even greater peril.

Mulligan reassures Gabriel regarding Rafe's mission while revealing a memory card containing footage of Gabriel's baby shower. The video serves as a poignant reminder of Gabriel's past and reinforces his connection to the resistance.

As Mulligan is given authorization to confront The Legislators, a shocking twist unfolds when he himself is enveloped in the same invisible substance used in earlier attacks. This revelation raises questions about his true allegiance and the resistance.

During the credits, a map shows the destruction of the Closed Zone and highlights burgeoning resistance movements across the U.S. and Europe. This visual serves as a rallying cry for humanity, signaling a resurgence in the fight against their alien oppressors.
