In rugged Northern Ontario, Brian MacLean edges out fellow bush pilots Johnny Dutton, Tiny Murphy, Blimp Lebec, and Scrounger Harris for lucrative work. The competition highlights a clash between his seat-of-the-pants flying and Dutton's by-the-book approach. The setting is 1939, as World War II begins to loom.

MacLean suffers a near-fatal fall from a pontoon while tying his plane to the dock. A doctor is flown in, and an emergency night landing through heavy cloud cover follows. This brush with death earns him a grudging gratitude toward Dutton and seeds a reluctant partnership to help Dutton raise seed funds.

During a graduation ceremony, MacLean and Tiny buzz the airfield in a defiant display while Air Marshal Billy Bishop speaks. Tiny blacks out and crashes, killing him, and MacLean loses his license as a consequence. The incident cements a growing rift with the military establishment.

Two transport aircraft crash, killing all 44 ferry pilots aboard, creating an urgent need for replacements. MacLean uses Tiny Murphy's papers to participate in the ferry mission and is reluctantly recognized by Dutton after Emily explains why MacLean married. They reconcile and Dutton allows him to fly again.

Dutton commands a flight of five bombers toward Britain. Near the coast of the British Isles, they are attacked by a German Messerschmitt Bf 109. Lebec is shot down first, followed by Scrounger, escalating the danger as the fighter menace closes in.

With Scrounger dead, MacLean uses his flying skill to crash his bomber into the nimble fighter, sacrificing himself to save the others. The fighter is destroyed, but MacLean pays the ultimate price. The mission continues with the remaining crew.

In the aftermath, Dutton, Emily, and the surviving pilots remember MacLean's courage and the costs of pride and loyalty. The war effort carries on, honoring the improvised roots of their service. The personal stories remain a powerful counterpoint to the larger conflict.
