In 1939, as war begins to cast its shadow, the rugged airways of Northern Ontario host a fierce rivalry among bush pilots. Brian MacLean, James Cagney, is a brash, instinct-driven flyer who hates rules, while Johnny Dutton, Dennis Morgan, flies by the book and dreams of starting his own airline. They battle alongside other tough pilots like Scrounger Harris, Reginald Gardiner, and Blimp Lebec, George Tobias, in a harsh landscape where skill and nerve decide who makes a living. Emily Foster, Brenda Marshall, runs a local store with her father, Foster, J.M. Kerrigan, and becomes a central figure whose fate tangles with MacLean’s choices.

MacLean’s life takes a dramatic turn when a perilous accident nearly kills him: he slips from a pontoon, bangs his head while tying his plane to a dock, and is saved by a doctor flown in and a risky night landing through heavy cloud. This brushes with death pushes him toward a temporary partnership with Dutton to help fund Dutton’s dream of an airline. To protect Dutton from ruin, MacLean marries Emily Foster—a sacrifice Dutton never learns about until later, and when he does, it winters their friendship. The decision haunts MacLean as he moves forward, torn between loyalty and pride.

Motivated by Winston Churchill’s radio words, the bush pilots enlist in the Royal Canadian Air Force, only to discover they’re deemed too old for combat and must train as flight instructors for the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. Their commanding officer is Reginald Denny, a figure who tests MacLean’s defiant, independent streak against the rigid military way of doing things. A dramatic trust is fractured during a high-stakes graduation ceremony when a stunt involving the celebrated WWI ace Billy Bishop—appearing as himself—goes tragically wrong; Tiny Murphy, Alan Hale, blacks out and crashes, killing him and effectively ending MacLean’s chances at keeping his license. > We shall fight on the beaches

The war’s pressure mounts when two transport aircraft crash, taking the lives of all 44 ferry pilots aboard. There is an urgent need to ferry a group of unarmed Lockheed Hudson bombers from Gander to Britain, so flight instructors must be augmented by civilian pilots. MacLean edges back into flying by using Tiny Murphy’s papers, and Dutton recognizes him, while Emily’s explanations of the past help mend the rift between them. MacLean and Dutton, now reconciled, are allowed to fly again.

A five-plane formation is assembled for the perilous crossing toward the British Isles. Near the coast, a German Messerschmitt Bf 109 closes in, and the fight grows fiercer. First Lebec is shot down, then Scrounger is killed, and the mission hinges on MacLean’s skill and nerve. In a final, selfless act, MacLean crashes his bomber into the nimble fighter, sacrificing himself to save the others and seal his reputation as a pilot who chooses duty over self-preservation.
