In 1965, in Los Angeles, Lucy Cullins, Whoopi Goldberg, her brother, and her mother head to a bustling mall to meet Santa Claus—the real Santa, Elvis Santa—who is on the verge of stepping down after a remarkable two centuries in the role and is already seeking a worthy successor. When Lucy sits on his lap, the hat he places on her head glows with a bright light, hinting that she might be the perfect replacement. Yet the moment the family heads home, tragedy strikes: Lucy receives news that her father has been killed, and the blow shakes her faith in the Christmas Spirit to its core.
Fast forward to the present day, Lucy has grown into a wary, cynical woman who prioritizes her job as a network executive for the Shop-A-Lot Channel over family life. Across town, Nigel Hawthorne as Nick is spending his last Christmas in the role, and he tracks Lucy down after learning that Shop-A-Lot is auditioning a Santa to boost holiday memorabilia sales. After nearly giving up on finding a truly worthy Claus, Lucy crosses paths with Nick and reluctantly hires him, unaware that he is the Santa from her childhood.
Nick’s arrival sparks a surge of activity: the network suddenly receives a flood of calls, and Christmas merchandise sales soar higher than ever before. With the success comes a visible shift in Nick as he begins to reconnect with the Christmas spirit and to see the community around him respond in kind. As their working relationship deepens, he shares stories about his long reign and hints at choosing Lucy as his successor, explaining that without a heir, a catastrophic flood could engulf the world—an idea he frames as the modern take on the Noah’s Ark tale. Lucy, however, dismisses it as a fairy tale and tries to keep him at arm’s length.
One night, Nick lays bare the truth of his mission and invites Lucy to close her eyes. When she opens them, she finds herself at the North Pole with him. Still skeptical, Lucy pleads to return home, and Nick complies, sending her back as if the Pole were a dream. Back in her apartment, she begins to recount the dream, only to be interrupted by Nick, who reveals it wasn’t a dream after all and once more pleads with her to don the Santa hat and become Santa Claus. Lucy remains unconvinced.
As Christmas Eve arrives, Nick makes his final broadcast, urging everyone to keep faith in the Christmas spirit and offering encouragement to all. After the broadcast, he thanks the staff and prepares to return to the North Pole, leaving Lucy with a hat on her dresser and a note promising that it’s never too late. When Lucy later rides home with her boss, she begins to reconsider the possibility of becoming Santa herself, realizing that her boss’s pursuit of money and power over Christmas is hollow. She returns home, discovers the hat and note, and, moved by a growing belief, places the hat on her head and feels the glow again—she understands that she truly is Santa.
At the North Pole, the elves glimpse Lucy’s transformation through a snow globe. Ralph, Taylor Negron, learns of Lucy’s awakening and heads to meet her with Nick. Lucy leaps from her apartment into a waiting cab, reunites with Ralph and Santa, and soon transforms fully into Santa. She and Nick, with Ralph by their side, begin delivering gifts to the homes below, starting at a church where her niece is performing in a choir. The moment is intimate and joyful: Lucy’s family witnesses the shift as snow falls over Los Angeles, and the sleigh appears for all to see. The realization that Lucy is Santa spreads through the crowd, bringing a warm, astonished smile to her relatives as she bids them farewell.
Together, Lucy, Nick, and Ralph rise into the Christmas night, their journey marking a new chapter where the spirit of giving, hope, and community endures in a world that finally feels ready to embrace it again.
