After the Civil War, a Union soldier is freed from jail and rides with a fellow inmate to Missouri. When his companion is executed for horse theft, the soldier—named California—carries the dead man's possessions to his family’s ranch. There he falls for his friend’s sister, only to find the war’s lingering ghosts haunting him once more.
