Jo is a young woman working as a hostess, also known as a “B girl,” in a shabby waterfront nightclub that operates as a front for criminal activities. The club is owned by Eddie Morgan, who maintains control and keeps watch by disguising himself as the piano player. The club’s environment is perilous and corrupt, attracting trouble and dangerous figures from the waterfront scene.

The story takes a darker turn when Annie, a former hostess, returns to the club to confront Morgan and express her anger about how he destroyed her life. Her visit is not just about revenge; she seeks to coerce Jo into becoming a witness against Morgan to help put him behind bars. However, Jo, overwhelmed with fear and uncertainty, refuses to testify. During her visit, Annie witnesses Jo being mistreated by a local thug, Red Connolly, which escalates into a violent fight.

One evening, a sailor named Dan Walters and his friends arrive at the club. Jo, feeling a spark of genuine interest and attraction towards him, begins to flirt. Normally, Jo would indulge in her routine of getting men drunk and stealing their wallets, but she finds herself genuinely liking Walters. Morgan, meanwhile, tries to manipulate Jo into stealing from Walters, demanding she follow her usual method. However, Jo’s clumsy attempt fails when Walters, noticing her discomfort, decides to leave the club disillusioned with her. This rejection hits Jo hard, as she had started to develop real feelings for him.

Jo becomes increasingly aware of her dire situation and the possibility of escaping her life in the nightclub. But her doubts are compounded by Annie’s experience—Annie’s own failed attempt to start anew leaves Jo questioning whether she can break free from this lifestyle. Morgan, furious over her failure to steal from Walters, physically abuses Jo, leaving her with bruises. When Walters later returns to the club and notices her injuries, he feels compelled to help. He offers to marry Jo and plans to leave her troubled world behind, giving her an opportunity for a fresh start.

Determined to help Jo, Walters begins investigating Morgan’s illegal dealings. His actions lead him to uncover significant criminal activities and secret operations within the waterfront scene. With this valuable information, he approaches Steve Mason, an undercover detective, to expose Morgan. Meanwhile, Morgan learns that Walters is trying to take Jo away and that Walters has spoken to Mason. In a desperate bid to eliminate the threat, Morgan attempts to kill Walters, resulting in a fierce fight that turns deadly. During the chaos, Morgan is stabbed, and Annie, overwhelmed by guilt, confesses to stabbing him. She then surrenders herself to Mason, accepting the consequences of her actions.

This story paints a stark picture of life on the fringes—showing how vulnerable women like Jo can be drawn into dangerous worlds dominated by crime, violence, and desperation. Through her interactions with Walters, viewers see a glimmer of hope for escape, but also the tragic reality that breaking free from such a life is fraught with peril and moral ambiguity.
