Bulletproof

Frank McBain is a Los Angeles cop and former CIA operative who left the agency after a botched mission where his partner Jack Benson died. He earned the nickname 'Bulletproof' for surviving multiple gunshot wounds, and this failure fuels animosity from peers and from Lieutenant Devon Shepard, who was involved in a love triangle with him and Benson.

U.S. intelligence learns of a secret camp located about 300 miles south of the Mexican border that trains Latin American communists and Arabic insurgents under the banner of the anti-American People's Liberation Army. The discovery provides a diplomatic pretext for action and sets the stage for a major military escalation.

Top army generals decide to convoy a new and nearly bulletproof MBT-90 tank (Thunderblast) past the border to entice its hijack by militants. They intend the event to serve as a diplomatic justification to wipe out the camp once the tank is within PLA territory.

Unaware of the mission's true objective, Lieutenant Devon Shepard is selected to be part of the tank's escort. Her inclusion foreshadows a confrontation between the mission's veneer and the personal history surrounding McBain and Benson.

A patrol of revolutionaries led by Captain Pantaro stops the convoy; most U.S. personnel are killed, while a few survivors, including Shepard and Sergeant O'Rourke, are captured and taken to the PLA camp along with the MBT-90.

At the PLA camp, Shepard encounters two men in charge, General Maximiliano Brogado and his Libyan advisor Colonel Kartiff, who display a strong distaste for the emancipation afforded to American women like her.

McBain is called back to the CIA and tasked with retrieving the prototype in a secret, lone-wolf operation. The assignment pits his desire for redemption against the dangers of a covert rescue behind enemy lines.

Back at headquarters, McBain discovers that Devon Shepard is among the captives and feels a renewed urge to redeem himself by aiding in the retrieval of the tank and the safety of the prisoner.

Kartiff and Brogado realize that the MBT-90 is inoperational because it has been outfitted with an electroshock device that prevents its use by unauthorized personnel. This complicates any attempt to leverage the tank for escape or strategic advantage.

The captors, aware of the tank's vulnerability, threaten to kill more of Shepard's squadmates if she does not disable the security device. The ultimatum heightens the stakes for both Shepard and McBain as the rescue plans progress.
