Brightwood (2022) Plot Summary & Ending Explained

At its core, Brightwood is a film about a marriage that has completely broken down, and the terrifying time loop serves as a supernatural forcing mechanism to make Dan and Jen confront the state of their relationship. Throughout the movie, we discover that every time the couple runs their loop around the lake, they inadvertently create independent copies of themselves. This isn't a traditional time travel story where the timeline resets; rather, it operates on multiverse logic where each iteration produces a new variant that must fend for itself against all the others who came before.

By the film's climax, we are following a variant couple who have become ruthless survivors, killing other Dans and Jens to stay alive. They eventually find a decomposing corpse of Dan at a campsite, which confirms the horrifying truth: there is no way out. When this Dan is brutally murdered by yet another variant, Jen flees and falls into a grotesque pile of dead Jens, proving that countless iterations have met the same fate. In a final moment, she encounters a mysterious silvery orb—possibly alien technology—before being killed by another Jen variant. This mud-caked Jen then brings the body back to her Dan, and together, they silently begin eating the remains.
