Alan Bleasdale’s five‑part series follows the unemployed Liverpool tarmac workers Dixie, Chrissie, Loggo and Yosser, and their mentor George Malone, a retired longshoreman and union leader. In a depressed 1980s Britain they struggle to keep families afloat while battling petty DHSS bureaucrats, as the welfare juggernaut is run by officials who barely possess a provisional licence, mixing bleak tragedy with dark humour.
