Blackthorn

Twenty years after his disappearance, Butch Cassidy living as James Blackthorn in a Bolivian village resolves to return to the United States after learning of Etta Place's death. He writes to his son Ryan to tell him he intends to come home and ends his long solitary exile. The decision sets the plan in motion for what follows.

Blackthorn heads for Potosí to cash out his horses, planning to fund his return. He keeps Yana in the loop, telling her he will see her again before leaving Bolivia.

Blackthorn is ambushed and nearly killed by Eduardo Apodaca while traveling toward Potosí. He shoots the attacker, but the Spaniard escapes with Blackthorn's money when the gambler's horse bolts away.

The Spaniard proposes to share the stolen money and leads them to an abandoned mine where the cash is hidden. After a brief pursuit by Patiño's posse, Blackthorn and the Spaniard escape with the money.

Back at the cabin, Yana comes to join Blackthorn and the Spaniard. He gives Yana a pocket watch won in a card game; she initially dismisses it as a gringo machine but later accepts it as a keepsake.

Blackthorn asks for one last night with Yana, but she says she must return to her family. That night, Yana returns to stay with him, creating a bittersweet moment before the departure.

The next morning, two female posse members arrive looking for the Spaniard. A firefight leaves Blackthorn wounded and Yana dead, altering the course of his plans.

In a memory sequence, Blackthorn recalls his days with the Sundance Kid. Sundance, wounded and near death, asks Butch to end his suffering, and Butch reluctantly kills his friend.

Blackthorn and the Spaniard flee across the Uyuni salt flats hoping to reach the coast for a boat. Midway across, the posse closes in, but the pair separate to kill their pursuers and escape.

Blackthorn is treated by a local doctor in Tupiza, who informs Pinkerton detective Mackinley of the presence. Mackinley confirms the man's identity and starts to reckon with the legends about the outlaws.

Mackinley later discovers the Spaniard stole money from miners, not from the mines owned by Patiño. This revelation horrifies Blackthorn and reframes his past gun battles with the miner's posse.

Chasing the Spaniard through the Andes, Blackthorn confronts him with the truth. The Spaniard admits the theft and Blackthorn shoots him, leaving the money for the Bolivian army to deal with.

The Bolivian army continues with Mackinley until reaching a barren region where the army commander punishes him by leaving him without a horse for helping Blackthorn escape.

In the closing scene, Blackthorn, reflecting on his life and friends, is last seen looking back over his shoulder as he presumably escapes across the mountains.
