Bezhin Meadow, an unfinished Soviet film by Sergei Eisenstein, follows a farm boy who opposes his father’s sabotage of the harvest to protect the Soviet state. Cost overruns and Eisenstein’s experimental methods angered officials, leading to its destruction. Only the first and last frames of each shot survive, saved by his wife Pera Atasheva; a 1967 reconstruction by Naum Kleiman and Sergei Yutkevich reassembles them to approximate the original.
