Cost overruns and Eisenstein’s experimental methods angered officials, leading to its destruction. Only the first and last frames of each shot survive, saved by his wife Pera Atasheva; a 1967 reconstruction by Naum Kleiman and Sergei Yutkevich reassembles them to approximate the original.
