Read the complete plot breakdown of Bewakoofiyaan (2014), including all key story events, major twists, and the ending explained in detail. Discover what really happened—and what it all means.

Mohit Chadhdha, portrayed by Ayushmann Khurrana, is an ambitious young professional striving to make his mark in the corporate world. He is in a relationship with the affluent and alluring Mayera Sehgal, played by Sonam Kapoor. Recently promoted, Mohit enjoys the perks of his success with a new car and an extravagant gold credit card. However, Mayera’s success continues to put her a step ahead in the race for corporate achievement.

Excited about their future together, Mohit decides to propose to Mayera, and she joyfully accepts. Yet, there is a significant hurdle to overcome: breaking the news to her father, V. K. Sehgal, a government bureaucrat portrayed by Rishi Kapoor. With V. K. in a bitter mood due to his recent transfer to the animal husbandry department—just a month shy of his retirement—Mohit faces an uphill battle. A strict and honest IAS officer, V. K. has always worried about not being able to provide the material comforts he wishes for Mayera since losing his wife. His reluctance to accept a commoner like Mohit as a suitable match for his daughter complicates matters considerably.

Under pressure, V. K. reluctantly agrees to test Mohit’s compatibility with Mayera before giving his blessing. Just then, things take a turn when Mayera receives an enticing job offer in Dubai while Mohit’s airline company goes under. V. K. jumps at the chance to end the engagement, believing Mohit’s job loss disqualifies him as a son-in-law. In a bid to protect Mohit, Mayera lies to her father, assuring him that Mohit is still employed. Together, they desperately search for a solution, but their efforts yield no success, pushing Mohit into bankruptcy.

As financial strains mount, tensions escalate in their relationship. Mohit struggles to mask his reality, resorting to borrowing funds from Mayera to cover his credit card bills, car payments, and to maintain the illusion of success in front of V. K. As the pressure builds, sweet moments of romance give way to heated arguments fueled by their increasingly strained finances. Mohit, in a last-ditch effort to stabilize his situation, sells his car, but the emotional fallout is severe, leading Mayera to cancel their wedding.

On the same day hopes seem to crumble, fate surprises Mohit when V. K. receives a job offer. Proud of his father’s achievements, V. K. prepares to celebrate with an engagement dinner. However, the joyous atmosphere shatters when Mayera learns of Mohit’s unemployment, igniting V. K.’s wrath. Disappointed and unable to see the depth of Mohit’s character, he ejects him from their lives.

With Mayera accepting her transfer to Dubai and Mohit finding a position as a coffee shop manager, both are left heartbroken and longing for one another. However, a pivotal moment occurs when V. K. recognizes Mohit’s true character; witnessing Mohit’s unwavering commitment to assist him professionally despite their estranged ties with Mayera.

In a turn of events, Mayera returns to India, hoping to persuade V. K. to join her in Dubai. Still, V. K. sabotages her transfer plans, tracking down Mohit and berating him, claiming Mayera would never want to associate with someone of his apparent station. Fueled by determination, Mohit confronts V. K. at Mayera’s home, challenging his dismissive remarks. This confrontation rekindles the couple’s feelings for one another, igniting their resolve to stand together against V. K.’s disapproval.

The story culminates in a powerful reunion where both Mohit and Mayera affirm their love, ultimately leading to a happy resolution where love triumphs over societal and familial barriers.
