In the aftermath of World War II, a diverse group of passengers boards a secure U.S. Army train bound for Frankfurt. Diplomats, scientists, military personnel, and others from American, Russian, British, French, and German backgrounds mingle in uneasy quiet. A German passenger makes overtures, but the other travelers rebuff him because of his nationality. The mood on the train sets a tense tone for what's to come.

A British passenger, Sterling, grows convinced the anonymous passenger is actually Dr. Heinrich Bernhardt, a diplomat intent on rebuilding a peaceful Germany. Tensions rise as Sterling vocally questions the concealment around Bernhardt’s identity. After retreating to his compartment, a bomb kills the man who turns out to be Bernhardt's bodyguard. The real Bernhardt has been traveling incognito with Lucienne, his secretary.

Upon arrival in Frankfurt, the passengers learn that the man killed was Bernhardt’s bodyguard and that Bernhardt himself has been posing as an anonymous passenger. The real Bernhardt travels with his secretary, Lucienne, and the disguise was intended to keep him safe. The revelation shifts perceptions and heightens distrust among the travelers. Suspicion grows as identities are revealed and questioned.

Welcoming Bernhardt in Frankfurt, Walther betrays him in an attempt to secure the return of his detained wife. The plan falters when they discover Walther’s wife had actually died long ago, a revelation that drives him to hang himself in despair. The betrayal leaves the group more cautious and distrustful as they continue to search for Bernhardt’s safety. The tragedy deepens the stakes for everyone involved.

With Bernhardt’s safety at risk, the passengers split up to cover as much of Frankfurt as possible. The search leads to an abandoned brewery where Bernhardt is held prisoner. Barnes, the American soldier who had seemed trustworthy, turns out to be working with the kidnappers, guiding the others to the hideout. An undercover agent assigned to Bernhardt's protection is discovered and wounded but escapes to inform authorities of the location. The knot of deception tightens as the siege looms.

American soldiers storm the hideout and free Bernhardt and Lucienne just as shots ring out. Inside, Perrot kills Kessler, the ringleader, revealing himself as a German collaborator seeking to usurp the role. The captive danger remains as Perrot’s true motives come to light and the authorities move to restore order. Bernhardt’s security and the group’s trust are shaken but intact.

After the breakout, Perrot volunteers to guard Bernhardt on the Berlin-bound connecting train, a plan that unsettles Lindley.
