Set in 1800 Rome, the film unfolds inside a dim prison where two thieves await their death and pass the waiting time by trading ribald stories. In the first tale, a duke of Ronciglione and his companion Nicolino confront a startling revelation: their wives have betrayed them, not only with other men but even with a priest. The final tale shifts to a more intricate domestic scheme. A husband, having spent all his money to win back his wife’s affection, pretends to be broke and proposes that he might even end his life. His wife responds with a controversial plan: she invites an elderly man, who has been a public companion to her, to live with them, forming a three-person “family.” The husband reluctantly accepts, but the wife soon grows bored and begins a long-standing affair with a much younger lover who meets her in a meadow outside town. The elderly man informs the husband of this betrayal, and together they ambush and kill the young man. The wife dies of heartbreak, and both the husband and the elderly man are executed for their crime.

As the film builds toward its culmination, Judgment Day arrives. The archangel inventories the sins of all involved and asks each accused soul how they plead. The two husbands and the wife offer self-serving hopes of Paradise, insisting they have lived in service to the Lord in their own ways. The young man, by contrast, expresses a desire to return to the old days on Earth, to indulge in the pleasures he once enjoyed. The archangel condemns the three adults to Hell while granting the young lover a path to Paradise. The frame story reaches its bleakly ironic zenith as the two thieves, facing their nooses, laugh through tears at the film’s macabre, inexorable punchline. In the final image, they hang suspended, lifeless, as the camera lingers on the moral reckoning they can neither escape nor escape from.
