Batman Unlimited: Mechs vs. Mutants

The Penguin sees an opportunity to return to Gotham and regain power. After being exiled in the Arctic with Freeze, he convinces Freeze to take him back to Gotham by promising a path to power for both of them. Penguin recognizes that Freeze's scientific abilities could be leveraged for a major scheme, and he positions himself as the mastermind behind the operation.

Earlier in the Arctic, the Penguin watches Freeze's demonstration of mutant-creating technology and immediately begins planning how to use it.

Freeze combines three dangerous substances from the villains he freed: Bane's Venom, Clayface's protoplasm, and Chemo's toxic waste. This mutagenic mixture transforms Killer Croc and Chemo into gigantic ice monsters. The serum is powerful enough that even Bane and Clayface later use stolen samples to mutate themselves into more formidable creatures.

In the Arctic, Freeze demonstrates his ability to mutate an isopod into a giant monster, showing the potential of his technology.

Bane and Clayface obtain samples of Freeze's mutagen when Buzz the penguin steals them from the laboratory. Both villains use these samples to transform themselves into even more powerful mutants. Freeze had warned that the serum's effects were unpredictable, but his warnings go unheeded as the villains greedily consume the remaining formula.

Buzz's theft of the samples creates the opportunity for further mutations.

Batman retrieves the Bat-Mech from Wayne Enterprises, while Green Arrow reveals that Dr. Kirk Langstrom built an Arrow-Mech for him after Queen Industries contracted Langstrom for research and development. These powerful robot suits give the heroes the size and strength needed to match the giant mutants in combat.

At the Wayne Tower technology showcase, Dr. Langstrom demonstrates his drilling mech technology, establishing his engineering capabilities.

Clayface secretly breaks out of his ice prison that was created during the battle and slips away into the Gotham sewers. This escape occurs after the main conflict is resolved, leaving an unresolved threat for future stories. The heroes are unaware of his escape as they celebrate their victory.

Lava-Clayface proves to be the most difficult opponent to contain, demonstrating his shape-shifting and adaptive abilities.

Buzz is the Penguin's perceptive companion in the Arctic who seems to understand Oswald's predicament. However, Buzz betrays Freeze by stealing samples of the mutagen formula, causing further chaos. After the heroes' victory, Buzz is captured and placed in a zoo.

Buzz's constant presence around Freeze's equipment suggests he understands the scientific operations better than initially shown.

The Flash and Nightwing use their superhuman speed and agility to quickly assemble a powerful laser cannon in the Batcave. Working with Batman, Green Arrow, and Dr. Langstrom's technical guidance, they create a weapon capable of countering the mutated threats and reversing the transformations, restoring the villains to their normal forms.

Langstrom's scientific expertise is established earlier when he demonstrates his drilling mech technology.

Both Freeze and the Penguin seek control over the operation and refuse to share power. Their alliance was purely opportunistic, with each villain believing they deserved to be the leader. This internal conflict weakens their coordination and ultimately leads to their defeat as they waste energy fighting each other instead of the heroes.

The Penguin's earlier promises of shared power ring hollow as his true ambition for sole control becomes apparent.

Damian, the new Robin, is dealing with the humiliation of failing to stop the Joker, falling from a building, and being saved by Batman. A video of this moment was posted online by a bystander, compounding his shame. He feels he has much to prove and would rather seek guidance from another Robin who has experience, but his fellow trainee is away with their team.

Alfred's reassurance that Damian is still learning sets up his eventual growth arc.

Batman trusts Damian with a critical task during the final battle, giving him the key to the Batmobile and instructing him to distract Lava-Clayface while the Bat-Mech is retrieved. Successfully carrying out this dangerous mission earns Batman\'s praise and demonstrates how much more confident and capable Damian has become.

Damian's earlier failure and his determination to improve set up this moment of redemption.

Using a drilling mech developed by Dr. Langstrom (originally designed for mining), Penguin and Freeze drill directly into Arkham Asylum. They successfully free Bane, Chemo, Killer Croc, and Clayface before escaping. Batman and Robin arrive too late to prevent the breakout.

The drilling mech technology shown at Wayne Tower is repurposed for the villainous attack.
