Years after Norman Bates' death in the asylum, Alex West learns he has inherited the Bates Motel. He travels to Norman's California hometown, now renamed Fairville, to claim the property. The inheritance sets the stage for Alex to attempt reopening the motel.

Alex begins seeing Mrs. Bates in the bedroom window and even glimpses Jake's corpse in the same view, reinforcing beliefs that the hotel is haunted. The sightings heighten fear among workers and deepen the town’s ghostly rumors. The haunting mood grows more palpable as renovations continue.

Willie becomes suspicious about the haunting after Alex mentions the first loan payment of $10,000 due the day after the motel opens. Henry reveals that the haunting was a hoax staged by the bank manager, Tom Fuller, who manipulated the loan to sabotage the motel. Barbara Peters books a room at the motel, planning to end her life due to aging and a history of failed marriages. Her stay brings her into contact with the motel’s darker past as strange occurrences begin to unfold around her. The check-in sets a chilling counterpoint to the revival of the property.

Barbara meets a teenage girl named Sally who invites her to an after-prom dance with other teens, including Tony Scotti. It is revealed that Barbara's real name is also Sally, and the teenage girl who took her own life 25 years ago is a ghost along with Tony and others.
