Maria [Maricel Soriano] and [Rez Cortez] are two small-time pickpockets in Quiapo, Manila, earning a living by slipping wallets from unsuspecting passersby. Their plan to lift a wallet from Baldo [Fernando Poe Jr.], a former pickpocket who has just been released after six years in prison, falls apart when Baldo outsmarts them and calmly returns the loot. Curious about Baldo’s sudden reappearance, he visits Iska [Anita Linda], the owner of a humble restaurant where Maria and Tikboy often gather, and learns from Iska that she fabricated a story claiming Baldo had become an overseas Filipino worker who had just returned from Saudi Arabia to cover up his disappearance. The trio’s paths converge when Maria and Tikboy show up at Iska’s place and spot Baldo dining, at which point he returns the wallets he had taken, signaling the start of a fragile new alliance.
Baldo rekindles an old bond with his friend Momoy David [Mel Martinez], a mechanic who helps him land a job as a charcutier at a local lechon shop. Meanwhile, Maria grows closer to Baldo and joins him on a plan to help Minyong [Augusto Victa], a friend of Maria’s, recover money he lost to counterfeiters and swap it for a counterfeit-free bargain—a real risk that tests their nerves and their trust. The mission tightens as Baldo opens up to Maria about his criminal past and urges her to leave pickpocketing behind for good, a plea she accepts with a wary hope. Yet Maria’s new resolve is strained when she notices Baldo meeting with a woman, stirring jealousy and uncertainty in her.
The lovers’ tension collides with danger when Maj. Corrales, the police chief, asks for Baldo’s help in dismantling a drug syndicate led by Kits. Dodong [Chuckie Dreyfus] and Caloy [Christopher Paloma], two orphans who unknowingly serve as mules for the trafficking ring, are delivering drugs hidden in a bird cage. Baldo intercepts the delivery, removing the narcotics and foiling the shipment. In a bold move, drug money is later transported to his paraplegic boss Don Julian [Fernando Poe Jr.] at a grand mansion, where Baldo and his allies stage a distraction to trap the criminals.
To stage a wider sting, Baldo temporarily uses Don Julian’s mansion to help Iska maintain the illusion that she has come into wealth while Katrina, Iska’s estranged daughter, returns with her Canadian husband George. A banquet is planned, and Kits’s syndicate arrives with Dodong and Caloy in tow, but Baldo’s friends strike first, beating the intruders and reclaiming the night. Iska reveals the truth about the mansion’s ownership, and Katrina accepts the reality with grace, while Momoy signals that the plan is working, lifting Iska’s spirits as the night ends with a narrow triumph. After the chaos, Ms. Ramos [Geena Sablan], a child-services worker, visits Iska’s restaurant to tell Baldo that Dodong’s orphan papers have been settled, meaning he can leave the system and begin a new life in the United States. Maria, who has been listening in, rushes to embrace Baldo, a moment that leaves Tikboy feeling left out and uneasy about the future they’re charting together.
