María Álvarez Penélope Cruz is an uneducated, impoverished farm girl in 1880s Mexico, watching her family’s small plot become a target as a ruthless U.S. land baron, Tyler Jackson Dwight Yoakam, presses his claim. Nearby, Sara Sandoval Salma Hayek Pinault is the opposite: the highly educated, affluent daughter of the same landowner, freshly returned from years of schooling in Europe after soaking in England, Spain, and France.
