In 1969, in a Bronx hospital, a thoughtful physician named Dr. Malcolm Sayer dedicates himself to a group of catatonic patients who had survived the devastating encephalitis lethargica outbreak decades earlier. Through meticulous care and keen observation, he discovers that simple stimuli can stir these patients back toward reality: catching a ball and feeling a gentle touch, hearing familiar music, or being spoken to by name can momentarily awaken them and give a window into a once-familiar world. Among the cohort, Leonard Lowe appears to move only slowly, yet he proves capable of communication in a surprising way—through a Ouija board that becomes a quiet link between him and Dr. Sayer.

A turning point arrives after Sayer attends a conference about the drug L-DOPA, which has shown promise for certain neurological conditions like Parkinson’s disease. He theorizes that this treatment might do more than the hospital’s standard approaches for his own patients. In a carefully monitored trial with Leonard, the medication works astonishingly well: Leonard awakens from his catatonia and re-enters life with a hunger for experience and motion. The initial victory sparks a renewed sense of possibility among the medical team, and Sayer seeks funding to extend the treatment to all who might benefit, dreaming of a broader awakening for the whole group.

As Leonard settles into his new life, he experiences the ordinary joys and tensions of freedom. He grows fond of Paula, a patient’s daughter, and begins to push against the strict boundaries that govern his days in the hospital. He questions why he cannot come and go as he pleases, and his longing for autonomy becomes a source of tension with the administration. Leonard’s decline is painful to witness, yet his resolve remains steadfast. Facing the mounting challenges, Leo nard shares a final moment of connection with Paula during a lunchtime that feels almost ceremonial. As they move together, Leonard experiences a fleeting calm—the spasms pause, and for a brief breath of time, he seems fully present. Sayer himself experiences growth in the process, shedding his own shyness enough to ask Nurse Eleanor Costello for coffee and conversation.

The hospital’s culture shifts toward greater empathy and dignity in care, inspired by what the awakenings have revealed about life’s fragility and value. Paula continues to visit Leonard, offering ongoing connection and care, even as his responses become limited once more.
