What Happens in Attack on Titan: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Attack on Titan (2022) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Attack on Titan depicts a world where humanity lives within three massive concentric walls to protect themselves from Titans—giant, humanoid creatures that devour humans. The inhabitants, known as Eldians, believe they are the last remnants of mankind. To fight back, the military utilizes Vertical Maneuvering Equipment (VME) and ultrahard steel blades to target the Titans' weaknesses.

The story follows Eren Yeager, a young boy living in Shiganshina. His life changes forever when the Colossal and Armored Titans breach Wall Maria, leading to the death of his mother. Consumed by a desire for revenge, Eren joins the military alongside his friends, Mikasa Ackerman and Armin Arlert. During a later battle in Trost, Eren discovers he possesses the rare ability to transform into a sentient Attack Titan.

As the conflict escalates, the narrative reveals a complex hierarchy of Titans:

* Pure Titans: The most common and predictable.

* Abnormal Titans: Unpredictable and dangerous.

* The Nine Titans: Powerful "Shifters" who can switch between human and Titan forms, including the Beast, Colossal, and Founding Titans.

Through various battles and political intrigue involving the royal bloodline and figures like Queen Historia, the Survey Corps eventually discovers the truth: they are not the last humans, but an oppressed sect of Eldians living on Paradis Island, surrounded by a world ruled by the Marleyans.

The climax reaches a devastating scale when Eren, seeking a radical solution to end the cycle of hatred, triggers the Rumbling—unleashing thousands of Wall Titans to commit global genocide. In a final effort to save humanity, a coalition of former enemies joins forces to stop him. The conflict ends when Mikasa kills Eren, which subsequently destroys the source of all Titan powers, freeing all Eldians from their curse. The world begins a slow process of rebuilding and peace negotiations, though the cycle of war eventually returns to the ruins of Shiganshina in the distant future.

Attack on Titan Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Attack on Titan (2022): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Eren Yeager unleash the Rumbling?

Eren starts the Rumbling as a radical attempt to break the inherited cycle of hatred and war between Eldians and the outside world. Working through Ymir in the Paths, he releases the Wall Titans so they will march beyond Paradis and kill the population outside the island. The later release of Eren’s memory blocks reveals a more calculated motive: he intended the catastrophe to spare roughly twenty percent of humanity, even though most of the world would die.

Foreshadowing: Eren’s childhood vow of revenge foreshadows the later escalation of his hatred into a willingness to sacrifice most of humanity.

  • eren yeager
  • rumbling
  • radical solution
  • wall titans
  • spare twenty percent
Q2

Why does Mikasa Ackerman kill Eren?

Mikasa kills Eren because he has become the agent of the Rumbling and refuses to stop the genocide, despite the global coalition’s attempt to reach him. Their bond makes the choice emotionally devastating, but she treats stopping him as her duty rather than allowing personal love to determine the outcome. She decapitates him in the final confrontation, and his death ends the Titan crisis.

Foreshadowing: Mikasa’s repeated protection of Eren establishes the emotional bond that makes her final attack against him so consequential.

  • mikasa ackerman
  • eren death
  • final battle
  • stopping the rumbling
Q3

How did Eren Yeager inherit the Attack Titan?

Eren inherited the Attack Titan from Grisha rather than creating its power spontaneously. Grisha passed that power to Eren shortly after the breach of Wall Maria, and memories of the transfer resurface during the Battle of Trost, when Eren first transforms. The later Shiganshina revelation adds that Grisha had obtained the separate Founding Titan by eating Frieda Reiss and passed that power to Eren when Eren ate him. These two inherited lines explain why Eren can access both the Attack Titan and the Founding Titan’s Coordinate.

Foreshadowing: Eren’s recovered memory of Grisha granting him power foreshadows the later Shiganshina revelation about Titan inheritance.

  • attack titan
  • grisha yeager
  • titan inheritance
  • founding titan
  • trost battle
Q4

What are the Paths, and why does Ymir Fritz help Eren?

The Paths are atemporal gateways that connect Eldians across time and space, and they lead Eren and Zeke to Ymir Fritz, the original Titan. Ymir’s consciousness holds the Founder’s power, but it is also burdened by a tortured history that has kept her within the Paths for thousands of years. Zeke wants her to stop the Subjects of Ymir from reproducing, whereas Eren persuades her to use that power for his own design, enabling the Rumbling.

Foreshadowing: Eren’s earlier use of the Coordinate shows how one shifter can influence thousands, anticipating Ymir’s role in releasing the Wall Titans.

  • paths
  • ymir fritz
  • founding titan
  • subjects of ymir
  • rumbling
Q5

Why does Eren’s death eliminate all Titan powers?

Eren is the last active link between the Founder’s power and the Titans, so killing him severs the source that sustains their transformation. Pure Titans revert to human form, Titan Shifters lose their abilities, and the Eldians are freed from the curse that let Marley turn them into weapons. The death therefore ends the Titans as a supernatural threat, not merely Eren’s role in the Rumbling.

Foreshadowing: The Paths reveal that Eren’s power runs through Ymir Fritz, making his death the release point for every Titan transformation.

  • eren death
  • end of titans
  • pure titans
  • eldian freedom
Q6

What are the Titans hidden inside the walls?

The three walls conceal enormous, dormant Wall Titans rather than containing only defensive stonework. Their later release through the Founding Titan’s power becomes the mechanism behind the Rumbling. The discovery means the walls are part of Paradis Island’s hidden Titan infrastructure, not just barriers built to keep Pure Titans out.

  • wall titans
  • three walls
  • rumbling mechanism
  • founding titan
Q7

Why are there Pure Titans inside Wall Rose?

The Pure Titans inside Wall Rose are transformed human beings from villages within it, not creatures that crossed the wall. Their appearance exposes the central truth that all Pure Titans are human victims of Titan transformation. This changes the Survey Corps’ understanding of the enemy from a separate species into a human-made catastrophe.

Foreshadowing: The earlier discovery of Titans sealed inside the walls establishes that Titan presence on Paradis can be hidden in places no one suspects.

  • pure titans
  • wall rose
  • transformed humans
  • titan origin
Q8

What does Eren’s Coordinate power let him do?

The Coordinate lets Eren command other Titans, turning them from independent threats into weapons under his control. He uses it to kill the Smiling Titan that murdered his mother and to send Pure Titans after Reiner and Bertholt. The same connection to the Founding Titan ultimately helps him unleash the Wall Titans, so this power is both a tool of revenge and the mechanism of the story’s largest catastrophe.

Foreshadowing: His ability to redirect Pure Titans during the Wall Rose battle foreshadows his later ability to awaken the Wall Titans.

  • eren coordinate
  • control titans
  • founding titan
  • smiling titan
Q9

Why do Reiner Braun and Bertholt Hoover betray the Survey Corps?

Reiner and Bertholt are infiltrators: Reiner is the Armored Titan and Bertholt is the Colossal Titan, both working for Marley to capture Eren and the Founding Titan. Their attempt to kidnap Eren and Ymir exposes the conflict beyond the walls, and Ymir willingly leaves with them so Historia remains out of enemy hands. Their betrayal turns the Survey Corps’ internal struggle into the opening phase of a larger conflict with Marley.

  • reiner braun
  • bertholt hoover
  • armored titan
  • colossal titan
  • marley betrayal
Q10

Why does Eren Yeager join the military after the Fall of Wall Maria?

In Attack on Titan, Eren joins the military because the Colossal Titan’s attack on Shiganshina kills his mother, leaving him consumed by a need for revenge on Titans. He enlists with Mikasa Ackerman and Armin Arlert and trains to become a soldier so he can fight the creatures that destroyed his home. His early vow begins as personal revenge but eventually becomes the justification for a much larger attack on the world.

Foreshadowing: Eren’s vow after his mother’s death establishes the revenge motive that drives his later radical choices.

  • eren yeager
  • fall of wall maria
  • military service
  • revenge motivation
Q11

Why is the Yeager basement important to the Survey Corps?

Grisha leaves Eren with the clue that the truth about their world is waiting in the Yeager basement, so the Survey Corps treats it as the key to explaining the Titans. Reclaiming Shiganshina is therefore not only a military objective but a way to reach the basement and uncover the island’s hidden history. The basement eventually reveals that the Eldians are an oppressed people trapped on Paradis Island rather than humanity’s last survivors.

Foreshadowing: The clue about the Yeager basement appears in Eren’s recovered memory during Trost, guiding the operation toward Shiganshina.

  • yeager basement
  • survey corps
  • grisha clue
  • eldian truth
Q12

Why does Historia Reiss refuse to devour Eren?

Historia refuses Rod Reiss’s plan because she will not help him preserve the Reiss family’s power by turning Eren into another Titan vessel. She rejects his demand that she devour Eren and smashes the serum, ending the succession scheme before it can proceed. Rod drinks the serum himself, becomes an Abnormal Titan, and is killed, leaving Historia to take the throne.

Foreshadowing: Historia’s hidden royal identity, revealed during the Wall Rose battle, foreshadows Rod’s later reliance on her bloodline.

  • historia reiss
  • rod reiss
  • founding titan
  • serum refusal
Q13

Why does Eren attack Marley’s capital at Liberio?

Eren and Zeke orchestrate the raid on Liberio to provoke Marley and move Eren’s larger plan forward. During the attack, Eren kills Willy Tybur and gains the War Hammer Titan’s power by devouring Willy’s sister Lara. The strike is therefore both a direct attack on Marley’s leadership and a calculated step toward the invasion and Rumbling that follow.

Foreshadowing: Zeke’s cooperation with Eren during the Liberio operation hints that their shared strategy extends far beyond a single raid.

  • liberio raid
  • marley capital
  • zeke yeager
  • war hammer titan
  • willy tybur
Q14

How does Armin Arlert inherit the Colossal Titan?

After Erwin Smith’s death, Levi Ackerman injects Armin with Titan spinal-fluid serum so he can take Bertholt’s Titan power. Armin then eats Bertholt to complete the inheritance, making him the new Colossal Titan. The transfer preserves the Survey Corps’ ability to confront Reiner and Bertholt, and it illustrates the two requirements for inheriting a Shifter’s power: serum and consumption.

Foreshadowing: Kenny’s serum and the possibility of inheriting a Shifter’s power are established before the Battle of Shiganshina.

  • armin arlert
  • colossal titan
  • bertholt hoover
  • titan inheritance
  • levi ackerman
Q15

What happens to the world after the Rumbling ends?

After the Rumbling and Eren’s death, Paradis Island and the wider world begin rebuilding, while Queen Historia leads peace negotiations intended to prevent another cycle of war. Armin, Levi, and Mikasa are recognized as heroes, and the Titan threat disappears, but the final scenes show Shiganshina reduced to rubble in a later conflict. The ruined city and the tree on Eren’s grave create a bittersweet ending in which temporary peace gives way to another cycle of violence.

Foreshadowing: The tree planted over Eren’s grave grows into the same kind of tree associated with Ymir’s discovery, visually linking the fragile peace to the threat of renewed war.

  • rumbling aftermath
  • peace negotiations
  • historia
  • shiganshina ending
  • future war

Curated lists built around what makes Attack on Titan tick: the same mood, the same kind of story or the same emotional payoff. Each list explains why these movies belong together.

Movies like Attack on Titan: Revenge Becomes a Moral Catastrophe

A wounded hero’s pursuit of justice becomes a devastating descent into mass violence. Explore movies like Attack on Titan where personal grief hardens into political extremism and radical revenge. These dark, intense war stories feature complex characters, shifting alliances, and high emotional stakes, tracing how a victim becomes an agent of the violence they hoped to end.

  • revenge
  • radicalization
  • moral collapse
  • cycle of violence
  • sacrifice
  • grief
  • Tone: dark, tragic, morally unsettled
  • Pacing: variable, escalating, explosive
Why these movies?

The story pattern: A character begins with a legitimate loss and a desperate need for belonging. As the conflict widens, grief hardens into ideology, alliances shift, and small victories grant the character dangerous power. The final stages force a painful reckoning with collateral damage and complicity, often leaving freedom or survival possible but redemption and lasting peace out of reach.

Why they belong together: These films are united by the inversion of the avenger: pain becomes ideology, ideology becomes action, and action multiplies the suffering. Their dark tone, relentless escalation, complex politics, and bittersweet resolutions make the cost of grievance impossible to treat as uncomplicated heroism.

Movies like Attack on Titan: Life Behind Defensive Walls

Communities endure scarcity, militarization, and fear inside worlds divided by walls. Discover movies like Attack on Titan: similar dystopian science fiction in which fortified communities endure military rule, scarce resources, and constant threats. These dark stories blend siege warfare with uneasy alliances, showing civilians trapped between ruthless rulers, resistant outsiders, and the grim costs of survival.

  • survival
  • resistance
  • militarized
  • Tone: dark, oppressive, ominous
  • Pacing: variable, alternating tension and battle
Why these movies?

The story pattern: Daily life unfolds inside fortified boundaries where protection increasingly resembles imprisonment. Scarcity and military authority deepen divisions within the community, while outside populations view the defenders as conquerors. As threats multiply, characters must decide whether to preserve the existing order, resist it, or negotiate with an enemy whose motives remain uncertain. Survival may be won without any side fully escaping the violence.

Why they belong together: These stories share a militarized world where civilians live behind barriers, resources are scarce, and the line between defender and occupier is unstable. Their variable pacing alternates political maneuvering with explosive combat, while recurring oppression, resistance, and civilian suffering keep the focus on the human cost of survival rather than clean heroic victories.
