In the year 1989, just prior to the Berlin Wall’s fall, MI6 agent James Gasciogne meets a tragic fate at the hands of KGB agent Yuri Bakhtin, who steals a vital piece of microfilm known as the List. This concealed information, hidden within a wristwatch, contains the identities of every active Soviet field agent. Compromised by an informant codenamed Spyglass, who sought immunity from MI6, the List holds the potential to prolong the Cold War for an additional 40 years. With Yuri remaining in Berlin, all intelligence agencies are on a frenzied hunt for this critical document.
Shortly after, Lorraine Broughton, a skilled spy for MI6, is summoned for an interrogation led by MI6 executive Eric Gray and CIA agent Emmett Kurzfeld concerning her Berlin mission. The film unfolds through a series of flashbacks, showcasing the lead-up to her mission.
Following Gasciogne’s death, Lorraine is urgently sent to Berlin with the primary objectives of recovering the List and eliminating Satchel, a notorious double agent who has betrayed MI6 by leaking intelligence to the Soviets for years. The List is deemed crucial as it potentially holds Satchel’s identity, which is of great interest to MI6.
Meanwhile, Spyglass has reached out to David Percival, the MI6 chief in Berlin, to inform him of the List’s delivery to Gasciogne. However, Percival refuses to acknowledge Spyglass, as Gasciogne failed to appear, leaving the List unverified. Despite Spyglass asserting he has memorized the contents, mistrust looms.
Upon her arrival in Berlin, Lorraine is swiftly ambushed by KGB operatives allied with arms dealer and KGB collaborator Aleksander Bremovych, yet she manages to escape with the timely assistance of David Percival, who claims he has never met Spyglass. As the plot thickens, Bremovych is also on the hunt for Bakhtin and the List.
With leads dwindling, Lorraine searches Gasciogne’s apartment where she discovers a photo of him and Percival. This revelation sets off alarm bells, leading her to suspect Percival’s loyalty. There, she also meets Delphine Lasalle, a vulnerable French agent, initiating a romantic relationship. Lasalle, curious about Lorraine, has been shadowing her since her arrival in Berlin.
As tension escalates, Bakhtin plans to auction the List to the highest bidder. However, with insider information, Percival kills Bakhtin and seizes the List for his own gain. Later, he informs Lorraine that Spyglass wishes to defect, yet Lorraine is distressed by his earlier omission of this critical detail, which could have altered their mission’s priorities.
Percival then volunteers to escort Spyglass, the Stasi officer whose life is now in jeopardy due to his knowledge of the List, across the border to West Berlin. Lorraine, determined to help, coordinates her own plans. However, during the escort, Percival betrays Spyglass, leading to a tragic confrontation that results in Spyglass’s death, firmly establishing Percival’s treachery in Lorraine’s eyes.
In a shocking twist, Lasalle, unknowingly following Percival’s orders, confronts him but meets a grisly end at his hands when she discovers his deceit. By the time Lorraine arrives, it’s too late; she finds evidence left by Lasalle proving Percival’s betrayal. As Percival tries to escape, Lorraine hunts him down, ultimately killing him and reclaiming the List. Lorraine further reveals that Percival had intended to turn the KGB against her, using Spyglass as a pawn in his game.
Returning to MI6 for debriefing, Lorraine presents compelling evidence against Percival, strategically misleading her superiors about the List’s whereabouts and manipulating the investigation’s outcome. Just a few days later, in Paris, she has a clandestine meeting with Bremovych, revealing her true identity as Satchel. In a brilliant act of misdirection, she provides him with a false List and decisively eliminates his henchmen, all the while admitting her cunning from the start. In the thrilling conclusion, she meets with Kurzfeld, disclosing her role as a double agent for the CIA, before returning to Langley with him to complete her mission.
