The dying mother superior sparks a split as nuns prepare to elect her successor. Younger nuns led by Virginia push for reforms—a modern science school, a bathroom, and a freer spirit—supporting secular‑educated sister Magdolna. Seminarists under Király Erzsi also rebel, but Magdolna hesitates, alarmed by Virginia’s attraction and ruthless tactics.
