Anton Špelec (Vlasta Burin) works as a musical‑instrument maker but dreams of being recognized as a sharp‑shooter. He hopes to receive a medal during the town’s parade honoring veteran marksmen, but when the council runs short of medals he must wait another year. Disappointed, he drowns his sorrows at the local pub, becomes heavily intoxicated, insults the emperor, and is sentenced to jail. Rather than serving himself, he dispatches an employee to take his place.
