Sathyavan and Kripakaran live opposite each other in the police quarters of Chennai. Sathya is a carefree, drinking troublemaker, while Kripa studies hard to become a Sub-Inspector. Kripa challenges Sathya to take his studies seriously, prompting Sathya to enroll for the SI exam after a heated moment with his father.

Sathya passes the physical, written, and interview thanks to his uncle's political connections and becomes an SI. Kripa, by contrast, fails to make it through. The success ignites a strain between the friends, as Sathya ascends while Kripa remains frustrated.

Kripa's father suffers a heart attack after Sathya's success, deepening the family stress. The incident enlarges the rift between the friends and adds pressure on Kripa's ambitions. The family turmoil foreshadows tougher times ahead.

Months pass and Sathya is posted to a nearby station and returns home. Kripa's father lies that Kripa has gone to Mumbai, but Sathya finds him in a local bar, a drunken man whose state mirrors the fractured friendship.

In parallel, Daya and Logu extort money from businessmen through kidnappings and rapes. Before Sathya becomes a policeman, he beats up Daya for attempting to molest Kripa's sister Uthra, establishing his protective stance.

Sathya gains fame by stopping knife-wielding attackers at a hospital, where the injured man dies later that night. This brave act leads to his recruitment into a special task force to pursue the gang behind the crimes.

Daya and Logu carry out two kidnappings with rape and ransom, and Kripa is drawn into their fold. He is driven by distress and desperation, and does not yet realize the harm he is helping to unleash.

During a third kidnapping, the police are warned, but the drop point is changed at the last moment. Kripa hides the gang at his house and joins them to fund his ailing father’s angioplasty, unaware of the consequences.

Sathya identifies Daya from a background check that reveals a past rape accusation in the army. Daya, Logu, and their accomplices narrowly escape a raid, with a key man killed to prevent information leakage.

Daya and Logu hijack the Inspector-General’s car, with the IG’s two daughters inside, and switch to a disguised van to slip past check-posts. Sathya follows a ransom call and begins piecing together the criminals’ plan.

The plan to kidnap the IG’s daughters is an elaborate diversion to draw police away. In the sugarcane fields, Kripa shows unexpected compassion toward the two girls, while Sathya tracks the case from a northern vantage point.

Daya splits the group and tries to reach Uthra with the money, leading to a confrontation where Sathya and the task force close in. Uthra confesses her love for Sathya and handcuffs herself to Kripa to prevent his escape.

Sathya shoots Kripa in self-defense to save one of the IG’s daughters from harm. Kripa lies dying on Sathya’s lap and discovers a ring Sathya had given him years earlier, a moment that brings tears to both. The story ends with Sathya marrying Uthra and having a son named Kripa.
