Gary Hamilton, a former Union Army officer, finds himself unjustly imprisoned and sentenced to forced labor for a robbery he did not commit. The true culprit was Acombar, his former friend, who committed the crime and deliberately left Hamilton’s water bottle at the scene as false evidence. Acombar, seizing the stolen gold, has risen to become a powerful landowner, manipulating the town and its inhabitants. After serving ten years, Hamilton is pardoned thanks to his distinguished military record, and he returns to his hometown, only to discover that Acombar now controls much of its affairs, along with his wife Mary. Mary was once Hamilton’s girlfriend, but she betrayed him by siding with Acombar, complicating Hamilton’s feelings and intentions upon his return.

On his journey back, Hamilton encounters Dick, the young son of Acombar—a boy unaware of his father’s past misdeeds. Posing as Acombar’s friend, Hamilton instructs Dick to inform his father of Hamilton’s impending arrival, setting in motion Acombar’s preparations to defend his territory. As Hamilton nears the town, Acombar, hearing of his approach, mobilizes his men and fortifies the town and his mansion to prevent Hamilton from reaching them. The town’s defenses are heightened amidst the threat of Hamilton’s revenge, leading to tense confrontations.

Using his resourcefulness, Hamilton manages to evade detection by navigating through the city’s ancient underground catacombs, originally an old cemetery now linked to the church’s basement. He also exploits an incoming tornado, which severely limits visibility and chaos, allowing him to systematically eliminate Acombar’s men in a series of covert assaults. Among those attacked are the Santamaría brothers, a trio once close to Hamilton, whose deaths are marked by inventive and brutal methods—one hung from a giant bell, another crushed under falling debris.

Throughout his violent campaign, Hamilton learns from Dick the truth about his father and mother. Despite this knowledge, Dick chooses to stay loyal to Acombar, whose influence continues to sway him. When Hamilton finally arrives at the mansion, he appears alongside Acombar’s wife, who attempts to warn her husband. In a tragic twist, Acombar, mistaking Hamilton for an enemy, accidentally shoots and kills Dick, his own son. Consumed by rage and grief, Acombar blames his wife for Dick’s death and murders her as well.

The confrontation reaches its climax during a gunfight inside the mansion, which is also engulfed in flames due to a fire that breaks out amid the chaos. Hamilton, cleverly hiding among mirrors, manages to shoot and kill Acombar in the final moments of the battle. With his revenge fulfilled, the next day Hamilton departs the ruined town, riding away on horseback. Demonstrating his sense of justice, he leaves all the gold he seized from Acombar for the townspeople, intending to help them repair the destruction caused during his quest for vengeance. His story ends with a reflection on the cost of revenge and the possibility of redemption through acts of generosity.
