Set in the 14th‑century medieval world, the film follows a humble peasant who becomes mesmerized by a statue of the Virgin Mary. Overcome by religious ecstasy, he petitions the clergy to be sealed within a tiny cell attached to the church, embracing the life of an anchoress and confronting the strict orthodoxy of his time.
