An Officer and a Murderer

Russell Williams, Gary Cole, known to friends and family as ‘Russ’, is a Colonel in the Royal Canadian Air Force. He is promoted to base commander at Canadian Forces Base Trenton, and celebrates the promotion with his wife, Mary Elizabeth Harriman, Nahanni Johnstone, at her charity fundraiser. Both Russ and Mary are well-respected members of their small community of Tweed, Ontario.

The night after the fundraiser, a hooded intruder breaks into a young girl’s room, stealing underwear, bras, and a beach photo. This pattern repeats, and in the next break-in the intruder’s face is revealed: Russell Williams himself, who steals similar items and even hides in a woman’s closet as she returns home. He leaves a message on her computer screen with poor grammar, hoping to throw investigators off the scent.

Throughout the investigation, Russ’s crimes escalate from breaking and entering to sexual assault, to rape, and eventually murder. The town dubs the killer the “Tweed Creeper,” yet no one suspects the base commander. Detective Jennifer Dobson, Laura Harris of Tweed, teams up with Toronto Detective Nick Gallagher, Rossif Sutherland, who is on exchange in Tweed, to pursue the trail through a string of assaults and the murder of Corporal Marie-France Comeau, an NCM under Williams’s command. The case grows increasingly personal as the detectives connect the dots between Williams’s position of power and the harm he causes.

A pivotal break comes when Dobson spots a vehicle parked in a field while on patrol. With Jessica Lloyd, Lisa Ciara, a resident whose home is tied to the SUV, reported missing and the vehicle now gone, police use tire-tread analysis to connect the car to Williams. They orchestrate a plan to bring him in under the pretense of seeking help on a cold case, and Williams agrees to answer routine questions. In the interrogation room, Russell removes his boots in the hallway, and as Dobson and Gallagher question him, his boot prints are matched to the ones found at the crime scenes. Two teams then sweep Williams’s Tweed home and his office at the Trenton Base, uncovering panties, bras, and a staggering amount of photo and video evidence, along with a complete record of the undergarments he had stolen.

In the interrogation, Gallagher shifts from casual conversation to a focused, invasive interrogation. Joined by Dobson, they lay out the full extent of the evidence and coax a confession from Williams. He is stripped of his title and medals, his career in ruins. The revelation leaves his wife, his friends, his remaining victims, and the entire community to grapple with the fallout, as well as the more than 3,000 military personnel under his command whose lives were affected by his actions. The story closes on the stark contrast between Williams’s public authority and the private devastation he leaves in Tweed.
