Almost an Angel

Terry Dean is about to be released from prison after sabotaging the facility's electronics as a farewell prank with Bubba and Guido. The inmates find it hilarious, while the guards are furious at the disruption. This stunt helps spark his decision to leave the burglary life behind and seek something less predictable.

Upon release, Bubba suggests a new path: bank robbery with a signature twist. Terry plans to outsmart surveillance by routing camera feeds to TV broadcasts using a modified universal remote, then appearing in disguise as a celebrity to sow confusion. The plan marks his shift from simple break-ins to more theatrical, televised crime.

Terry's first heist, disguised as Willie Nelson, goes off without a hitch. The bank is baffled by the fake feed and the celebrity arrival. The successful caper confirms his new, showy approach to crime.

After the heist, Terry spots a young boy about to be hit by a van and impulsively pushes him to safety. He is struck by the vehicle and ends up in a hospital. This near-death moment acts as a catalyst for a spiritual turn in his life.

In the hospital, Terry experiences a nebulous encounter with God, who introduces himself as his probation officer. The divine visit hints at a second chance and a mission: to do God's work as an angel in training. It redefines his life from crime to redemption.

Terry awakens with a renewed sense of purpose and tries a second bank hold-up, this time disguised as Rod Stewart. A gang of amateur robbers disrupts the scene, and one would-be rival rigs the moment so the gun is loaded with blanks. He begins to believe he is an immortal angel and embraces a higher calling.

Guided by a trail of signs—Moses Bros. Moving Company and Paradise Bar—Terry travels to a new town and crosses paths with Steve Garner at the Paradise Bar. Steve, a wheelchair-bound man with a terminal illness, is drawn to Terry’s acceptance and energy and offers him a place at the youth center he runs with his sister Rose.

At the youth center, Terry earns Rose’s trust by quietly standing up to two drug dealers with Steve's help, while also teaching boxing and fixing arcade games for the kids. Rose remains cautious at first, but Terry’s consistent actions gradually win her over. He becomes a positive, protective presence in the community.

The center's backer, George Bealeman, with a veneer of Christian faith, withholds funds. Terry uses his technical know-how to influence Bealeman by recording and editing a TV evangelist's segment, and he triggers a cross on the rooftop with lighting effects via the remote. Bealeman, moved by the broadcast, begins to envision a revitalized center.

That evening, detectives close in on Terry, and Steve warns him of danger. As Steve rushes away in his wheelchair, a sack of glass bottles breaks, cutting his femoral artery and he bleeds out in Terry's arms. Bealeman has already left, and the illuminated cross becomes a sign from God, signaling Steve's passing and Terry's continuing mission.

After Steve's death, Terry tells Rose that he is almost an angel. Rose checks the universal remote he left behind and finds it empty of batteries, yet the cross atop the church shines on its own. She runs after him, torn between doubt and belief.

Terry steps into the street and a speeding truck passes through him rather than hitting him, proving he has died and become an angel. Rose witnesses the miracle and takes comfort in the belief that he will return someday. With this, Terry continues his mission to do God's work, promising to come back.
