The story begins in New Orleans during 1939, where we meet Charlie B. Barkin, a charming yet morally dubious dog. He is characterized by his witty personality and a life of mischief, having recently escaped the dog pound with the help of his loyal sidekick, Itchy Itchiford.

Charlie returns to the casino riverboat that he once ruled alongside his former business partner, Carface Caruthers. The atmosphere is vibrant, filled with the excitement of gambling and camaraderie among the canine characters.

A fierce argument erupts between Charlie and Carface over money, culminating in betrayal when Carface schemes to send Charlie back to the pound. This pivotal moment sets off a chain of events leading to Charlie's tragic fate.

Under the guise of friendship, Carface deceives Charlie into leaving town with half the profits. This betrayal leads to Charlie's untimely demise at the hands of Carface and his henchman, Killer, marking a significant turning point in the narrative.

After his death, Charlie finds himself in Heaven, where a wise whippet angel reveals that dogs inherently possess goodness and loyalty, granting them access to paradise. However, he is warned about the consequences of trying to cheat death with a magical gold pocket watch.

Determined to make amends and seek revenge, Charlie reunites with Itchy and Scratchy to establish a rival business against Carface’s operations. This marks the beginning of Charlie’s mission to reclaim his life and confront his past.

The trio discovers that a brave young orphan girl named Anne-Marie, who can communicate with animals and predict horse outcomes, has been captured by Carface. This incident compels Charlie to save her, intending to guide her towards a better future.

With the help of Anne-Marie, Charlie and Itchy establish a thriving junkyard casino. However, as their operation grows, questions about Anne-Marie’s well-being start to surface, forcing Charlie to confront his intentions and the impact of their actions.

Charlie's internal struggles intensify when Anne-Marie learns of his deceitful actions, driving her to reconsider her loyalty. This prompts a haunting nightmare about damnation, emphasizing the gravity of Charlie's choices and their repercussions.

During their adventures, Anne-Marie falls ill with pneumonia, putting her life in danger. This crisis compels Charlie to reconsider his priorities and the impact of their misdeeds on Anne-Marie's well-being.

In a confrontation with Itchy, Charlie's selfish motivations towards Anne-Marie are uncovered, creating a rift in their friendship. As Charlie faces the consequences of his actions, Anne-Marie decides to leave, putting her safety at risk.

Charlie embarks on a frantic rescue of Anne-Marie amid an ambush from Carface and Killer. In a climactic moment, he sacrifices himself to save both Anne-Marie and the golden watch symbolizing his mortality, showcasing his ultimate act of redemption.

In the aftermath, Kate and Harold embrace Anne-Marie into their family, providing her with the love and care she deserves. Meanwhile, Charlie’s selfless actions lead to his redemption, allowing his spirit to reunite with Anne-Marie as he ascends to Heaven.
