Pinocchio

In the midst of Italy’s Great War, the skilled carpenter Geppetto, portrayed by Tom Hanks, faces the devastating loss of his beloved son, Carlo (played by Gregory Mann), after an accidental aerial bombardment by Austrian forces strikes their town. The tragedy unfolds when Carlo, just ten years old and a cherished companion to Geppetto, falls victim to their careless return to base operations. In his grief, Geppetto honors Carlo’s memory by planting a pine cone, chosen by Carlo before his untimely death, near his grave. For two long decades, Geppetto mourns, his heart forever heavy with sorrow.

As fate would have it, an anthropomorphic cricket named Sebastian J. Cricket, played by Joseph Gordon-Levitt, takes residence within the very pine tree that emerges from the planted cone. In a moment of desperation and intoxication, Geppetto cuts down the tree to carve a new son from its wood. Passing out before completing his creation, he unwittingly leaves a puppet unfinished. Meanwhile, a blue Wood Sprite, who takes the form of a creature with wings and eyes, breathes life into the wooden puppet, naming him Pinocchio. The Sprite, meeting Sebastian, promises to grant him a wish—one he hopes to use for fame—in exchange for guiding Pinocchio through the challenges of life.

As Geppetto ultimately discovers Pinocchio’s animated existence, chaos ensues in his cabin, leading to a frantic attempt to contain the puppet’s newfound curiosity. In a bid to assess the potential threat Pinocchio poses, Podesta and a priest visit Geppetto. Realizing that Pinocchio is harmless, yet unruly, Podesta insists Geppetto must send the puppet to school. However, the next day, Pinocchio’s journey takes an unexpected turn when he encounters Count Volpe (played by Christoph Waltz), a showman in financial ruin, and his performing monkey, Spazzatura (portrayed by Cate Blanchett). Count Volpe seizes the opportunity to recruit Pinocchio into his circus, viewing him as a potential goldmine to restore his failing enterprise.

When Geppetto searches for his beloved puppet, he is guided by Sebastian to the circus. A struggle ensues between Geppetto and Volpe, leading to a disastrous accident that sends Pinocchio into the street, where he is struck by a vehicle. Following this tragic event, Pinocchio enters the afterlife where he encounters the enigmatic Death (also voiced by Tilda Swinton), who reveals his immortal condition and warns him that each return will prolong his time spent in this realm.

Upon his return to the living world, Pinocchio grapples with his circumstances, joining Count Volpe’s circus to avoid the draft imposed by the strict Podesta. In a twist of fate, Volpe vanishes with his circus before Geppetto can extract him. During their venture to rescue Pinocchio at sea, Geppetto and Sebastian find themselves swallowed by a gargantuan sea monster. Meanwhile, Pinocchio uncovers Volpe’s deceit, only to find himself used as an endless source of entertainment. In retaliation, he disrupts a performance for Mussolini, resulting in dire consequences.

Through various trials, including bombings and near-death experiences, Pinocchio navigates his growth and learns the bittersweet essence of sacrifice, friendship, and family. As he attempts to liberate both himself and Spazzatura from the clutches of Volpe, a climactic confrontation ensues resulting in Pinocchio making the ultimate sacrifice to rescue Geppetto.

In a powerful moment, he reconnects with Death, requesting to return to save Geppetto, despite the risk of losing his immortality. Ultimately, his wishes are granted, and he is resurrected by Sebastian’s heartfelt desire. Reunited, Pinocchio and Geppetto strive to build a future together, though fate has more in store for them. Outliving all he holds dear, Pinocchio is compelled to seek out new adventures, paving the way for a journey of self-discovery and growth.

During the credits, Sebastian entertains the Black Rabbits in the ethereal afterlife, leaving a lingering message of hope and continuity beyond life itself.
