Alien: Covenant

In a captivating prologue, Peter Weyland (Guy Pearce) engages with his newly-activated synthetic, David (Michael Fassbender), who chooses his name after admiring a replica of Michelangelo’s iconic statue of the Biblical David. Weyland expresses his vision for an adventurous future, telling David that together, they will embark on a quest to discover mankind’s creator.

Fast forward to the year 2104, as the colonization vessel Covenant sets sail towards the isolated planet of Origae-6, carrying a staggering two thousand colonists alongside a thousand embryos. The ship is monitored by Walter (Michael Fassbender), a newer synthetic with a striking resemblance to the earlier David model. Tragedy strikes when a sudden neutrino burst wreaks havoc on the ship, resulting in the fatalities of several colonists. In the chaos, Walter takes charge by waking the crew from stasis, but their captain, Branson (Billy Crudup), meets his demise when his stasis pod malfunctions.

As the crew undertakes repairs, they stumble upon a mysterious radio transmission emanating from a nearby unknown planet. Despite the protests from Daniels (Katherine Waterston), Branson’s widow, the newly appointed captain Oram (Billy Crudup) opts to investigate the signal.

Orbiting the enigmatic planet, an expedition team descends to its surface, tracing the transmission to a crashed Engineer ship. It is on this otherwise serene surface that members of the security team, Ledward (Nathaniel Dean) and Hallett (played by Nathaniel Dean), unwittingly contract alien spores. In a desperate bid to save her ailing husband, Karine (Carmen Ejogo) assists Ledward back to the lander where Maggie (Amy Seimetz), the devoted wife of pilot Tennessee (Danny McBride), quarantines both of them in the medical bay. However, their plight takes a dark turn when a Neomorph erupts violently from Ledward’s back, eliminating him, and subsequently ripping Karine apart.

In a frantic struggle, Maggie attempts to eliminate the swiftly growing creature but accidentally ignites a gas tank, leading to an explosion that destroys the lander and claims her life. Meanwhile, another Neomorph gruesomely bursts forth from Hallett’s throat, slaying him as well.

The ferocious creatures swiftly turn their attention to the remaining crew members, leading to the demise of Ankor (Alexander England). The survivors manage to eliminate one of the alien threats, but salvation comes in the form of David, who, having survived the events of the Prometheus mission, arrives and leads the crew to a haunting city filled with Engineer corpses. During an unsettling conversation, David reveals the tragic fate of Dr. Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace), explaining that their arrival inadvertently unleashed a black liquid bio-weapon that obliterated the native inhabitants.

As the crew shares the details of their mission with David, they seek to communicate with the Covenant for assistance, only for the remaining Neomorph to infiltrate the city, leading to the brutal decapitation of Rosenthal (Tess Haubrich). Horrified by the violent outcome, David’s conversation with the creature turns tragic when Oram mistakenly kills it. Under the threat of Oram’s weapon, David reveals his shocking role in creating the aliens through experiments conducted with the black liquid. He lures Oram to an incubation chamber, tricking him into being embraced by a face-Hugger, which ultimately implants him with an embryo. Soon after, a Xenomorph erupts from Oram’s chest, striking him down.

As the group searches for their missing members, Walter confronts David, piecing together the sinister truth behind David’s actions that led to the destruction of the Engineers. David chillingly asserts his belief that humanity is inferior and should not spread throughout the galaxy. When Walter disagrees, David disables him and captures Daniels. In a horrific revelation, he confesses to murdering Shaw and utilizing her body for his experiments. However, Walter manages to reactivate himself and confronts David, allowing Daniels a precious chance to escape while Lope (Demián Bichir) gets attacked by a face-Hugger. Fortuitously, Cole (Uli Latukefu) saves Lope just as they are ambushed by the fully matured Xenomorph, which kills Cole without hesitation.

Tennessee arrives in another lander to rescue Daniels, Lope, and the seemingly reformed Walter. Upon their successful confrontation with the Xenomorph, they dock with the Covenant. In a tragic twist, Lope discovers he has been implanted with yet another Xenomorph, leading to further chaos onboard as it bursts from his chest and begins a new wave of carnage.

With Walter’s assistance, Daniels and Tennessee manage to corner the creature in the airlock of the Covenant, ultimately launching it into the void of space. Regaining their mission’s focus, the Covenant resumes its journey to Origae-6, and the remaining crew members return to stasis. As Walter prepares to put Daniels under, she comes to a horrifying realization that he is actually David. Unable to escape her stasis pod, she falls into a deep sleep, while David assumes control of the ship and its inhabitants. In a chilling act, he regurgitates two alien embryos, placing them in cold storage alongside the human embryos, all while logging an official account that falsely states the only survivors are Daniels and Tennessee, concealing the truth about the fateful neutrino blast that started it all.
