In 1916, shortly before Romania enters World War I, Lieutenant Tudor Gheorghiu is stationed on the Austro‑Hungarian border. Desperate for news of his wife Lena, he secures a brief leave, though he is plagued by jealousy and suspects infidelity. After his grandfather’s death, Tudor inherits a fortune, with “gigolo” lawyer Andrei Nicolau appointed executor and secretly coveting Lena. As war erupts, both men receive commissions in the same regiment—Tudor as a junior lieutenant, Nicolau as a major—binding their fates in a tangled contest for Lena’s love.
