Kyle Graham, Andrew Byrne, is a severely autistic child whose intense meltdowns and limited communication test the patience of his parents. His mother Nicola Graham, Keeley Hawes, and his father Rob Graham, Ben Miles, grapple with how best to help him navigate the world around him. Nicola believes that Kyle’s autism can become less severe over time through patient integration with everyday life, while Rob leans toward a different path: sending Kyle to a specialist boarding school led by the charismatic and caring headteacher, Clive Mantle as John Havers. Rob’s decision is complicated by another strain in their marriage, as family friend Rachel, Lorraine Pilkington, offers him casual sex, adding tension to an already delicate family dynamic.

Nicola’s closest allies are her parents, Granny Pat, Sheila Hancock, and Grandpa Jim, Duncan Preston, who dote on Kyle and provide practical support when needed. Open-minded about autism therapies, Nicola reads about breakthroughs and wonders if a therapy dog could be a turning point for Kyle. Rob, meanwhile, remains skeptical about introducing a dog into their family routine. Kyle’s world begins to broaden when he names his golden retriever puppy Thomas after Thomas the Tank Engine, a small detail that becomes a gateway to bigger emotional lessons.

Through Thomas, Kyle starts to learn about emotions and interpersonal relationships. He begins to identify feelings more clearly, and Rob discovers a surprising coping mechanism: he can calm Kyle’s tantrums by adopting a voice he attributes to Thomas. This simple shift in communication gradually softens the strains in Rob and Nicola’s marriage, and Nicola even discovers she is pregnant with a second child, her hope for the family renewed.

But life tests the growing bond in unpredictable ways. Thomas falls ill, and a fear grips the family that if the dog dies, Kyle might regress. The fear proves unfounded, and Thomas makes a full recovery, bringing relief and a renewed sense of stability to the household. In the film’s emotional culmination, Kyle speaks his first clear acknowledgment of his parents and utters a heartfelt “I love you,” a moment that marks a quiet, powerful milestone in his ongoing development.

Before the credits roll, the film pauses to reflect reality by presenting an epilogue that reveals what happened to the real-life counterparts of the characters. The real Kyle, now pursuing his own path, plays in a pop punk band called Firing at Statues, a detail that adds a poignant postscript to Kyle’s journey.
