In a college town in Bangalore, Abhi is a student who meets a Muslim girl Bhanu, whose relatives are staying in Abhi’s rental house. The two quickly strike up a connection, and what begins as a cautious acquaintance soon grows into a real relationship. But the romance draws a sharp line in the sand when Bhanu’s father, Mohammed Khan, learns of their bond and reacts with shock and fury. He comes to Bangalore to confront Abhi, finds him at the college, and launches an attack. Abhi fights back, not to harm, but to defend himself, and his initial assault on Khan is brutal; he stops only when he realizes Khan is Bhanu’s father, a moment that unsettles him and reverberates through the people around them.
Khan steps away from the confrontation, and the group leaves for Hubli in search of a safer place. Along the way, Abhi and his friends manage to connect with Bhanu, who is torn between love and family expectations. Bhanu’s grandmother urges Abhi to leave the house immediately, warning that Khan and his men could return after prayers at the mosque. Curious and unsettled, Abhi asks about the reason behind Khan’s attempt on his life, and the grandmother directs him to speak with his supposed mother, Janki. This leads Abhi back home, where he confronts Janki with questions and discovers a truth that surprises him: she is his adoptive mother, and his biological parents were Ruksana Bano and Joseph.
The revelations unfold in a way that reshapes the entire family history. Ruksana and Joseph had fallen in love and married despite the social barriers of their time, but their inter-religion union drew the wrath of Khan and his fellow elders, including Abdul Ghaffar Khan. When the couple’s whereabouts were discovered, Khan and Abdul Ghaffar Khan brutally killed them and nearly killed an infant Abhi. Local residents intervened just in time to save him. The community’s hesitations about adoption eventually give way to a heartfelt decision when Janki steps in and adopts Abhi, giving him a new home and a fresh start in Bangalore.
Armed with the truth, Abhi makes a painful choice: he decides to break up with Bhanu for the sake of Janaki’s family history. Bhanu, learning of Abhi’s past from her own grandmother, comes to a painful realization of her own responsibilities and agrees to put distance between herself and Abhi for the sake of her family. The couple parts ways in a quiet, restrained moment, each weighing the consequences of their love against the pressures pressing on their families.
Khan, misjudging the situation, believes Bhanu has run away to marry Abhi and resolves to eliminate him once more. In a tense clash, Abhi proves capable and defeats Khan, but the victory is bittersweet. Bhanu’s grandmother then steps in, urging Khan to show mercy and to curb his cruelty. The elder man, haunted by what he has done, comes to a reckoning and finally accepts that Bhanu should be free to marry Abhi, if the couple still wishes to pursue their relationship.
