Abducted: The Mary Stauffer Story

Ming Sen Shiue was a former student of Mary Stauffer who became obsessed with her. The film establishes that he had been listening to her family from inside their house, suggesting a long period of stalking and fixation before the abduction occurred.

Jason witnessed the abduction outside the salon and was forced into the trunk of Mary's car. Ming killed him to eliminate the only witness to the crime and prevent him from alerting authorities.

After discovering a broken basement window, dirty shoe prints, and a listening device hole in the Stauffer home, police suspected someone with electronics knowledge who knew Mary personally. They examined her old school yearbooks to identify former students, leading them to Ming Sen Shiue.

Ming used the camera as a tool of psychological control, turning the captivity into what he described as a 'televised ordeal.' The interviews allowed him to exert power over Mary while documenting what he considered their relationship.

Ming transported Mary and Beth in an RV, binding them to gas lines beneath the floor. If they pulled too hard, it could trigger an explosion. He installed listening devices and warned that any shouting for help would endanger others nearby.

On Day 45, after the family returned to Ming's home and were allowed slightly more freedom in a bedroom due to good behavior, Beth managed to call Irv Stauffer. The call was brief and supervised, with Beth reassuring him they were safe but unable to reveal their location.

When Ming became enraged after Beth wandered to the bathroom, he tied Mary and Beth to a door. Mary then pulled the door from its hinges and led Beth outside. They moved toward the RV and hid behind it as police closed in, leading to Ming's arrest at his workplace and their rescue.

Ming Sen Shiue was arrested at his workplace and later sentenced to life in prison with parole denied in 2016. The postscript reveals he remains incarcerated.

Jason's body was discovered during the police investigation into the abduction. He had been killed by Ming shortly after being forced into the trunk of Mary's car.

Ming introduced his cousin Brian to Mary and Beth, explaining there was extra padding on the closet floor so Brian couldn't hear them. This was another psychological tactic to keep the victims uncertain about who else knew their location and whether anyone might help them.

On Mary's birthday, Ming raped her and then recorded an interview asking if she was enjoying her birthday. He became angry when she said she couldn't enjoy anything while married, insisting he was making love to her rather than committing assault.
