What Happens in A Writer's Odyssey: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of A Writer's Odyssey (2021) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Six years after his daughter Juzi, nicknamed Tangerine, Shengdi Wang disappears during a human trafficking abduction, former bank employee Guan Ning, Jiayin Lei, becomes obsessed with finding her. His fixation shatters his marriage, drains his savings, and sends him wandering across China chasing rumors of missing children. He repeatedly clashes with suspected traffickers and criminal networks, earning a reputation as a volatile, single-minded vigilante.

During a tense confrontation, Guan is arrested but released by Tu Ling, a mysterious employee of the powerful Aladdin Group. Tu Ling, Mi Yang, guides Guan to Li Mu, Hewei Yu, a wealthy but physically frail chairman who promises help only if Guan agrees to assassinate Lu Kongwen, Zijian Dong, a young novelist.

Lu Kongwen is the writer behind the online fantasy Godslayer, whose protagonist is a heroic young man also named Kongwen. In the created world, Kongwen is aided by Black Armor, and the city is ruled by Redmane, a fearsome four-armed demonic ruler. Jingfei Guo embodies Black Armor, a guiding presence bound to Kongwen, while Redmane’s reign feeds Li Mu’s growing physical pain whenever the story’s violence spills into reality. Fearing the plot could seal his fate, Li Mu pressures Guan to carry out the assassination.

As Guan tails Lu Kongwen, he discovers the author is not a celebrity but a struggling young man living with his mother. The lines between fiction and reality begin to blur as Guan notices eerie parallels: the fantasy city mirrors real locations, and events from the manuscript echo in the real world. Inside the fantasy realm, Kongwen travels through a ruined landscape under Redmane’s oppressive shadow, protected by Black Armor. He learns Redmane killed his family and dominates the population through fear and supernatural power. Along the way, Kongwen encounters a young girl warrior who resembles Tangerine, hinting that Guan’s missing daughter may exist within this other world.

Guan grows to sympathize with Lu Kongwen, recognizing that the writer may not grasp the supernatural consequences of his own creation. He also uncovers Tu Ling’s ambivalence about Li Mu’s aims. As the story approaches its climax, the boundary between fiction and reality continues to thin, and injuries endured by Redmane begin to affect Li Mu in the real world, while real-world events trigger violent mutations in the fantasy narrative.

Li Mu reveals his true plan and deploys assassins and corporate power to force Guan into completing the murder. But Guan turns against Li Mu, clashing with the company’s enforcers while Kongwen confronts Redmane in the collapsing fantasy city. In a pair of parallel battles, Guan realizes Li Mu and Redmane are two manifestations of the same malevolent force. In the fantasy realm, Kongwen mortally wounds Redmane as the city falls; in the real world, Guan survives a brutal showdown with the armored assassin tied to Black Armor’s world. With Redmane’s destruction, the supernatural link between the two realms begins to unravel.

After Li Mu’s downfall, Guan receives new evidence that Tangerine may still be alive and resumes his search with renewed hope. Meanwhile, Lu Kongwen survives and presses on with his writing, now aware that his stories hold the power to reshape reality itself.

A Writer's Odyssey Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about A Writer's Odyssey (2021): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Li Mu want Lu Kongwen dead

Li Mu wants Lu Kongwen dead because the novelist's fantasy story 'Godslayer' is directly affecting his physical body. Whenever violence occurs in the manuscript, Li Mu experiences severe physical pain in the real world. The villain Redmane in the novel is somehow spiritually linked to Li Mu, and as the story's violence escalates, Li Mu's condition deteriorates. He believes killing Lu Kongwen will stop the story and prevent his own death.

Foreshadowing: Early in the film, Li Mu's frailty is established, and his connection to the novel's violence becomes clear when he grimaces during violent scenes.

  • li mu
  • lu kongwen
  • assassination
  • motivation
  • redmane

Q2

How does the fantasy novel affect the real world

The novel 'Godslayer' bleeds into reality through a supernatural connection. When Lu Kongwen writes violent scenes in his manuscript, those events simultaneously occur in the fantasy realm and cause physical effects in the real world - specifically on Li Mu, who shares a mystical link with the villain Redmane. Injuries that Redmane suffers in the story manifest as physical pain and wounds on Li Mu. This creates a feedback loop where real-world events trigger changes in the novel, and vice versa.

Foreshadowing: Guan begins experiencing dreams of the fantasy city, and he notices real locations mirroring the fictional setting.

Q3

What is the connection between Li Mu and Redmane

Li Mu and Redmane are two manifestations of the same malevolent force. Redmane is the tyrannical four-armed demon ruler in Lu Kongwen's novel who kills Kongwen's family and enslaves the people. Li Mu is his real-world counterpart - a wealthy, physically frail man whose body deteriorates as Redmane suffers in the story. They are spiritually linked, making Li Mu essentially the physical anchor for the novel's villain.

Foreshadowing: Li Mu's pain intensifies specifically when Redmane is attacked in the manuscript.

Q4

Why does Guan decide to protect Lu Kongwen instead of killing him

Guan decides to protect Lu Kongwen because he realizes the writer is ignorant of the supernatural consequences his story creates. Lu Kongwen is just a struggling young man living with his mother, not a malicious figure. Guan grows sympathetic after understanding that Lu Kongwen genuinely doesn't know his fiction is causing real-world harm. Additionally, Guan's own daughter Tangerine may exist within the fantasy world, giving him personal stakes in the story's outcome.

Foreshadowing: Guan observes Lu Kongwen's modest lifestyle and sees his humanity, softening his initial mission.

Q5

Who is Tangerine and what happened to her

Tangerine is Guan's daughter, whose real name is Juzi. She was abducted during a human trafficking incident six years before the story begins. Guan has spent those six years obsessively searching for her, which destroyed his marriage and drained his finances. The story suggests she may have been transported into the fantasy world of 'Godslayer,' as Guan sees a young girl warrior who resembles her inside the narrative.

Foreshadowing: The timeline establishes Tangerine's abduction as the catalyst for Guan's entire journey.

Q6

What role does Black Armor play in the story

Black Armor is a guiding figure in the fantasy world of 'Godslayer,' embodied by Jingfei Guo. He is bound to protect Kongwen, the hero of the novel, and serves as his mentor and protector throughout the journey. In the real world, there exists an armored assassin connected to Black Armor's realm - the same person who fights Guan during the climax. Black Armor represents the archetypal guardian in the meta-narrative, linking both worlds.

Foreshadowing: Black Armor appears early in the fantasy narrative, consistently protecting Kongwen.

Q7

How do the two worlds converge at the climax

At the climax, Guan fights Li Mu's assassins in the real world while Kongwen battles Redmane in the fantasy realm. The two narratives run in parallel - as Kongwen mortally wounds Redmane, Li Mu suffers catastrophic injuries simultaneously. The battle reaches a turning point where Guan realizes Li Mu and Redmane are the same entity. When Redmane is finally killed, the supernatural link between both worlds breaks, ending the dangerous crossover that has shaped both realities.

Foreshadowing: Throughout the film, injuries to Redmane directly affect Li Mu, previewing this convergence.

Q8

What happens to Tangerine at the end of the movie

At the end, after Li Mu's defeat, Guan receives new evidence suggesting Tangerine may still be alive. The exact location or status is left ambiguous, but the implication is that she exists somewhere beyond the broken link between worlds. Guan resumes his search with renewed hope, driven by the possibility that his daughter survived her abduction.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Guan spots a girl warrior in the fantasy world who resembles Tangerine, hinting at her existence.

  • tangerine

Q9

Why does Guan become a violent vigilante

Guan becomes a violent vigilante because his daughter Tangerine's abduction destroyed him psychologically. Six years of searching with no results left him obsessed, volatile, and willing to attack suspected traffickers and criminal networks directly. His marriage crumbled and his savings were depleted, but nothing could stop his single-minded pursuit of any lead about missing children. This violent reputation is what catches Tu Ling's attention and sets the plot in motion.

Foreshadowing: The opening establishes Guan's confrontations with traffickers as his defining behavior.

  • guan
  • vigilante

  • obsession
  • daughter

Q10

Why does Tu Ling help Guan despite working for Li Mu

Tu Ling serves Li Mu but develops conflicted feelings about his methods. She releases Guan from police custody and guides him to Li Mu, ostensibly to fulfill the assassination bargain, but she increasingly doubts the morality of forcing a grieving father to commit murder. Her ambivalence reflects the film's exploration of complicity and moral boundaries, and she ultimately allows Guan to make his own choice rather than strictly enforcing Li Mu's agenda.

Foreshadowing: Tu Ling's hesitation appears during key moments when Li Mu's plans become more ruthless.
