Byun Jae-Wook [Hwang Jung-min] is a short-tempered prosecutor who only pursues the truth, earning a reputation for his rough, no‑nonsense approach to investigations. A turning point arrives when a company owner consults him about a man he beat after an alleged rape of his daughter. Jae-Wook offers counsel that reflects his legal expertise and cool resolve. The prisoner he helps asks what he could do for Jae-Wook in return, promising he will reveal it later, a thread that will tug at the balance of power when it reappears later in the story.

Five years pass, and Jae-Wook crosses paths with Chi-Won [Gang Dong-won], a young fraudster who knows intimate details about Jae-Wook’s case. The former prosecutor sees an opportunity to shape Chi-Won’s abilities, training him to carry out plans beyond the prison walls. With Jae-Wook’s guidance, Chi-Won learns how to leverage his own wit to secure a chance at freedom, and the two form a wary, complicated alliance aimed at countering those who framed Jae-Wook.

As Chi-Won gets involved, he uncovers crucial connections: he tracks down a friend of the suspect in Jae-Wook’s murder case and records a confession that the suspect suffered from asthma and relied on an inhaler. The compiled evidence is sent back to Jae-Wook, who begins piecing together a case for parole and prepares the documents to present to the judge overseeing his fate. Yet this new line of inquiry catches the eye of a powerful political figure: a congressional candidate who previously served as assistant general of the prosecutors’ office and is willing to do anything to shut the case down. The whistleblower who could expose the truth is beaten, leaving Chi-Won with only one option:逃走, a desperate escape from a system that seems bent on crushing them both.

Realizing the danger, Jae-Wook turns to fellow inmates he once helped and enlists their support to push back against the people who engineered his downfall. The plan centers on taking down Woo Jong-gil [Lee Sung-min], the Asst. Prosecutor General whose influence and political ambitions threaten to bury the truth behind a wall of power and self-preservation. The narrative then unfolds through sharp, revealing flashbacks that show Jong-Gil’s ruthless actions during the original investigation: he colluded with a builder to encroach ecological land and, in a brutal turn, beat a prisoner to obtain the inhaler that led to the man’s death by suffocation.

With the weight of new evidence, Jae-Wook’s retrial hinges on a recording in which Jong-Gil admits he possessed the inhaler. The clarity of that admission becomes the turning point that overturns the previous verdict and pivots the entire case toward justice, even as the system fights to preserve its precious illusion of control.

When the moment of release finally arrives, Chi-Won greets Jae-Wook with a simple bag of tofu, signaling a cautious partnership that could extend beyond this story. The film closes on a somber, hopeful note: Jae-Wook urges Chi-Won to live honestly, a moral directive grounded in faith and perseverance, as he lightly taps him on the back of the head in a gesture that blends mentorship with hard-won affection.
