Eric Phillips, David Niven, a concert pianist who has spent 21 years on the road, returns home to his own building. He is served a warrant to perform repairs and learns that his former financial adviser, Peter Danilo, Joseph Buloff, bought the building with Eric’s funds as an investment. When Eric visits the property, he encounters the tenants, including the young model Polly Haines, Jane Wyman, and he is drawn to her.

Eric and the tenants agree to improve the building together, starting with a roof garden and a day-care center. But a building inspector deems the repairs insufficient. Eric blames the former owner and present manager, Horace Willoughby, Victor Moore, for the shoddy work and fires him. Polly defends Horace, explaining he is a good man who was forced to sell. Overcome with remorse, Eric rehires Horace to lead the repairs.

Eric and Polly fall in love, while Bruce Arnold, Wayne Morris, grows jealous. Following a bit of counsel from their musician friend Mme. Karina, Maria Ouspenskaya, Eric slows his hands-on approach. Bruce tries to sow doubt, telling Eric that Polly isn’t truly interested and that her show of affection is a ploy to sell him insurance.

Eric plans to tour again, but before he goes, Horace locks him with Polly in his apartment. They talk and uncover that both Bruce and Peter want to separate Eric from Polly for selfish reasons. In the end, Eric leaves on tour with Polly, and the trip becomes a honeymoon.
