A Hole in the Head

Tony Manetta moved from New York to Miami with two friends about twenty years ago, chasing wealth and the lure of success. One friend, Jerry Marks, ended up as a prosperous promoter, while his younger companion wound up driving a taxi. Tony now runs a struggling hotel called the Garden of Eden, a glossy symbol of his once grand dreams. He was raised in poverty but spoiled in equal measure, spending money on sharp suits and a Cadillac while constantly treading water in debt and resisting any real change in how he lives. He is also the widowed father of an earnest 11-year-old boy, Ally Manetta, whose future lives in Tony’s hands.

When rent is five months overdue, Tony is handed a brutal 48-hour ultimatum by the landlord: raise $5,300 or lose the hotel. In a panic, he calls his older brother, Mario Manetta, who runs a clothing business and has lent Tony money before. Tony fabricates a story about needing the loan for Ally’s illness, and the ruse brings Mario and his wife, Sophie Manetta, to Miami. What they uncover is a Tony who has never truly left behind his reckless habits. Mario sees a man who wastes money on fantasies rather than building something honest and solid, and he offers to stake him—on one condition: no more grand schemes, just a practical, small business. He also arranges for Tony to meet Eloise Rogers, a widow who has suffered losses of her own and who seems like a more suitable companion for Tony than his current girlfriend, Shirl.

Tony is drawn to Eloise, and Ally warms to her as well, which softens the picture Tony has of his life. Eloise, however, speaks plainly about her past: having lost her husband and son, she longs to be with someone who truly needs her—an insight that complicates Tony’s dreams yet still draws him toward a new kind of responsibility. The encounter at the party with Jerry rekindles Tony’s old hunger for success, and he lays out a plan to buy land in Florida and launch a second, dreamlike Disney-style venture.

Jerry seems intrigued, and the two head to a greyhound track where Tony bets the $500 he earned from selling his Cadillac to match Jerry’s larger wager. The dog wins the race, and Tony lets the winnings ride into the next event, a choice that exposes his mounting desperation. Jerry’s reaction—cold and scornful—reveals to Tony that the man he once trusted is no longer a partner but a reminder of how far Tony has drifted. The confrontation ends with Tony taking a hard hit: a punch from one of Jerry’s bodyguards after Tony throws the cash back at him, a blunt symbol of the collision between Tony’s dreams and his fragile finances.

With the weight of reality pressing in, Tony decides that Ally would be better off living with Mario and Sophie in New York, telling Ally that he is no longer able to provide what they need. Yet the moment on the beach—Tony alone, Ally finding him, Eloise stepping in—shows that the emotional tides are turning. The story closes on a note of tentative reconciliation: Mario and Sophie plan a long overdue vacation, leaving Tony to face the consequences of a life chasing glory while a family’s need for stability quietly roots itself in the background.
