Robert Benson, a finance guru and best-selling author, is portrayed by Will Ferrell as he and his wife, Sarah Benson, navigate a fragile family landscape. At the heart of their life is their one-year-old daughter, Sully, whose arrival once promised happiness now sits alongside a heavy secret: a miscarriage that followed a devastating accident years earlier. During Sully’s first birthday party, a faulty dock railing collapses, plunging Sarah into the lake and shattering the future the couple had imagined. The tragedy leaves Sarah unable to bear more children, and the couple must rebuild while coping with the long shadows of loss.

Five years afterward, the Bensons’ world has grown more complicated. Robert, once a confident financial mastermind, has become a recovering alcoholic, increasingly withdrawn and fiercely protective of Sully, who herself faces the daily challenge of managing type-1 diabetes. The tension between healing and vigilance sets the tone as the family leans toward expanding their circle through adoption. Bridgette Gibson, introduced to them as an expectant mother who would join their home to deliver her baby, comes into the picture with a smile that soon masks more troubling motives. Bridgette, Jessica Lowndes in the role, begins to unsettle the family in small, unsettling ways—she discreetly rips a magazine cover featuring the Bensons, effectively erasing Sarah’s image from a public moment and hinting at a desire to rewrite their story.

For Sully, the warning signs are closer than they appear. The young girl notices that Bridgette’s “pregnancy” might be faked, yet the manipulative plan grips Sully in a way that makes disclosure feel dangerous. Bridgette’s connection to a man named Dwayne Tisdale, Jake Weary, reveals itself as the danger escalates: a push that sends Sully into traffic, a cruel act that exposes Bridgette’s true partner in crime and confirms her intent to keep Sully away from a truth that could unravel everything.

Robert’s discovery brings a crucial shift in the escalating crisis. A book he autographed years earlier, addressed to a fan named “Joni,” surfaces among Bridgette’s belongings, revealing that Bridgette is the very person Robert once slept with—an old flame now returned as a threat to his family. The revelation compounds the danger as Sully is kidnapped by Bridgette and Dwayne and taken to a cabin across the lake. Dwayne assumes a ransom scenario, but Bridgette’s plan is darker: she wants to erase Sarah and claim both Robert and Sully for herself.

In the chaos that follows, Charlie, Bryan Safi, Sarah’s employee in the organic foods venture, is shot and killed by Dwayne during a search for Sully. Sully’s health deteriorates from the lack of insulin, pushing the adults into a desperate confrontation. Bridgette’s coercive tactics culminate in a brutal sequence where she wounds Robert and subdues Sarah, trapping her in a running vehicle in a closed garage to stage a suicide by carbon monoxide poisoning. Robert fights free, rescues Sarah, and the couple regroups, forced to confront the extent of Bridgette’s malice.

With Sully’s life on the line and time running out, Robert navigates to a bridge where Bridgette must cross to leave the area. Bridgette, driving Dwayne’s truck with Sully seated beside her, encounters Robert at the midpoint of the bridge. A failed attempt to run him down ends in a crash that disables the truck, and a tense standoff begins. Bridgette attempts to coerce Sully into returning, but the bold child breaks away and flees toward safety. The moment of truth arrives as both parent and child plunge into the lake, escaping the crumbling danger. Bridgette aims a final gunshot, only to be met with a lethal response from Sarah, who stands behind her, and Bridgette falls to her death.

In the aftermath, the Benson family retreats to a fragile but hopeful calm. Six months pass, and their home is once again filled with warmth and laughter as they share a quiet dance in the kitchen with Sully, reaffirming that love and resilience can endure even the darkest trials.
