A Better Tomorrow

Ho surrendered to buy time for Shing's escape. While fleeing through the sewage tunnel with Shing, Ho told his protégé to run ahead while he stayed behind to surrender to the approaching police. This act earned him a three-year prison sentence but allowed Shing to get away safely.

Earlier in the film, Ho takes Shing under his wing as a mentor, showing the loyalty that later motivates his sacrifice.

Kit blames Ho for their father's murder. While Ho was in prison, triad gang members attacked the family home to use their father as leverage against Ho's silence. The attacker fatally stabbed the father before Kit and his girlfriend could subdue him. On his dying breath, the father begged Kit to forgive Ho, but Kit's grief turned into resentment toward his brother's criminal lifestyle that drew the violence to their family.

The father had repeatedly pleaded with Ho to retire from crime, creating tension between Ho's criminal life and his family's safety.

Mark traveled to Taiwan to confront the mastermind behind the ambush that sent Ho to prison. During a violent confrontation at a restaurant with the leader's henchmen, Mark killed the mastermind but was badly wounded in the leg during the fight. The injury left him with a permanent limp, requiring a leg brace, and transformed him from a confident operative into a bitter, broken man.

Mark's loyalty to Ho drove him to seek revenge in Taiwan, establishing his willingness to sacrifice for their friendship.

Shing orchestrated the original ambush in Taiwan to eliminate Ho and seize control of the counterfeiting operation. Years later, when Ho is released from prison and refuses to rejoin the triad, Shing tries to force him into drug trafficking. When Ho refuses, Shing attacks the taxi company, brutalizes Mark, and traps Kit, revealing his ambition to eliminate Ho and his former allies rather than share power.

Shing's initial role as a lower-ranking member mentored by Ho hints at his opportunism and desire to climb the hierarchy.

The computer tape contains the digital data for the printing plates used in the counterfeit money operation. Mark steals it from Shing's headquarters, and they discover it also contains evidence proving Shing engineered the original ambush three years earlier. The tape becomes their leverage to blackmail Shing for money and an escape boat.

The printing operation shown in the opening prologue establishes the valuable asset that Shing now controls.

Kit gives Ho the gun because Shing reveals he will receive immunity once in police custody, meaning he would escape justice for his crimes. With Mark dead and Shing about to walk free, Kit chooses to let Ho kill Shing rather than see the murderer go unpunished. This act represents Kit's ultimate acceptance of Ho as his brother despite everything.

Shing's earlier threats and his control over the triad have consistently put the brothers in danger throughout the film.

After shooting Shing, Ho handcuffs himself to Kit to accept accountability and walk toward the police together. This act symbolizes his commitment to face the consequences of his criminal life while honoring his brotherhood with Kit. By binding their wrists, Ho shows he is no longer running from his past or from his family, he accepts his fate while reconciling with his brother.

Ho's earlier attempts to reconnect with Kit and his vow to retire after one more deal reflect his long-standing desire to protect family.

Mark returns to help Ho and Kit during the final confrontation at the pier when they are overwhelmed by Shing's men. He comes back to ensure their escape, prioritizing their safety over his own chance to flee on the boat. During the shootout, Shing fatally shoots Mark, but his sacrifice allows Ho and Kit to survive and ultimately defeat Shing.

Mark's earlier actions, seeking revenge in Taiwan and urging Ho to confront Shing, demonstrate his unwavering loyalty to their friendship.

Ho and Mark use the computer tape as leverage to arrange a meeting with Shing at the pier, demanding money and an escape boat in exchange for not exposing Shing's crimes. Kit arrives intending to arrest Shing but is taken hostage, triggering the standoff. This escalates into the climactic gunfight where Mark is killed and Ho ultimately shoots Shing.

The earlier theft of the tape and the decision to blackmail Shing set this final exchange in motion.

After his release from prison, Ho chooses to work at a taxi company run by ex-con Ken rather than return to the triad. He wants to leave his criminal past behind and build a legitimate life, partly to honor his father's dying wish and partly to reconcile with Kit. However, Shing's refusal to let him leave, he pressures Ho into drug trafficking and attacks his friends, ultimately drags him back into violence.

Ho's early promise to his father to retire after the Taiwan deal establishes his desire for a lawful life.
