Toby, a young English businessman, travels to South Africa to run a publishing firm, ignorant of apartheid’s realities. At first he sees no conflict in courting an affluent white socialite while also becoming involved with a dedicated anti‑apartheid activist. As he befriends Zaku Mokae, a black South African, Toby witnesses both subtle and overt racial prejudice among the white minority, forcing him to confront the oppression around him. A tragic event finally brings the harsh truth to a head.
