Inspired by a ballad by Taras Shevchenko, this film explores a recurring Ukrainian folk tale of a woman named Catherine who rescues her lover by disguising him as her brother. The story serves as a parable, reflecting dramatic and heroic episodes throughout Ukrainian history. From historical conflicts to events like the Chernobyl accident, Catherine repeatedly loses her home, but embodies the resilience of generations of Ukrainians as she rebuilds. The film connects this narrative to the tradition of "Toloka," a communal effort symbolizing Ukraine’s enduring spirit and survival.
