What Is 125 Years Memory About? (No Spoilers)

The plot of 125 Years Memory (2015) without spoilers: what it is about, who it follows and where it takes place, told without the twists or the ending. Enough to decide whether it is your next watch, not enough to ruin it.

Spanning two continents and nearly a century, this historical drama links Japan and Turkey through a story of disaster, rescue, and remembered kindness. In 1890, the Turkish frigate Ertuğrul is battered by a typhoon off the coast of Wakayama, bringing surviving sailors to a poor fishing community far from home. The villagers of Kashino face an overwhelming emergency with little more than courage, compassion, and the resources to share.

In the aftermath, Tamura, a village doctor, and his young assistant Haru help care for the injured. Their work places them at the intersection of hardship and hospitality, as desperate survivors are welcomed into a community of only sixty households. Among the sailors is Mustafa, an officer whose experience with Haru begins to cross the boundaries of language and nationality. Their connection lends intimate warmth to the larger history, while the villagers’ sacrifices introduce a theme of generosity sustained by people who have very little themselves.

Nearly a century later, the setting shifts to Tehran during the Iran–Iraq War. Harumi, a teacher at the Japanese school, and Yutaka Nomura, Japan’s ambassador, confront the growing anxiety of Japanese citizens stranded far from home. Official efforts to organize a rescue are complicated by the escalating danger around them. Harumi’s persistence pushes Nomura toward an unconventional appeal for assistance, connecting the immediate crisis to the unfinished legacy of an earlier act of compassion.

The story turns toward Turkish Prime Minister Turgut Özal, who considers an exceptional evacuation effort, and Murat, an embassy staffer trying to rally Turks at Mehrabad Airport. Murat begins invoking the bond formed between two distant peoples almost a hundred years before. With the world under pressure and old memories offering little practical protection, the film’s central question becomes whether gratitude can survive as a living force across generations—and whether compassion can bridge borders when circumstances demand it.
