009 Re:Cyborg

The year is 2013, and skyscraper bombings ripple across the globe under the direction of a shadowy force known as His Voice. 27 years after the original 00 Cyborg team disbanded, Joe Shimamura / Cyborg 009, now living with his memories blocked and reset every three years by Professor Gilmore, finds himself caught between a murky past and a fragile present. Alongside him, Great Britain / Cyborg 007, who now serves the British SIS, and Jet Link / Cyborg 002, who has aligned with the NSA after a falling out with the team and Joe, cross paths in a New York bar to trade intel about His Voice and Pyunma’s discovery of a fossil that resembles an angel’s skeleton, suggesting a deeper link to the city-shaking events.

Joe Shimamura is more than a mystery to himself. He lives as a regular high school student, yet his cybernetic brain keeps hearing His Voice. He clings to the feeling that he has unseen family and friends, a sense that his girlfriend Tomoe cannot quite erase. In the background, Dr. Isaac Gilmore suspects the United States government, specifically the NSA, may be pulling strings to reclaim global dominance—an indictment that casts a long shadow over the current crisis.

As the world trembles, a dramatic strike lands in Dubai: a B-2 bomber, piloted by a US aviator controlled by His Voice, fires missiles at the city. Jet Link / Cyborg 002 gives chase to intercept, while Cyborg 009 [Joe Shimamura]—now wielding his own unique powers—unleashes his Acceleration mode to destroy the missiles. The conflict escalates when 002 manages to knock 009 off the plane, and the pilot detonates a nuclear bomb that devastates Dubai. 009 outruns the blast, but the shock leaves him unconscious on a desolate shore. In his mind, he sees a burned-out city and a comforting apparition of Tomoe reminding him of his purpose, while the EMP blackout plunges communications into silence and leaves the team believing Joe is dead.

With missiles still in the air, 003 Françoise Arnoul, Chiwa Saito, and 001 Ivan Whisky, Sakiko Tamagawa, weave a desperate defense. 003 fires interceptors that take down nearly all the threats, yet one remains. The clock ticks as Joe pleads for intervention, and 001 agrees to teleport him into space to disable the final threat. However, 001 warns that returning him from such a distance would drain his power completely, potentially ending his life in orbit.

In a furious twist of fate, 002 (Jet Link) risks everything to help 009, but the attempt taxes his own rockets and destabilizes his craft, sending him spiraling toward Earth. In a moment of resolve, Joe speaks to God, acknowledging humanity’s capacity for both folly and brilliance, and pleading for Earth’s mercy. He asks for a chance to save the world, even if it means a monumental sacrifice. The bomb detonates in space, and the resulting light forms a cross above the planet. Francoise watches two falling stars, and silently prays for both.

Time passes in an ambiguous, dreamlike way, and Joe awakens in an apartment that appears to be Venice. Françoise Arnoul explains that he’s in her “safe house.” The others—Jet, Great Britain, and Pyunma—join him there, and Dr. Gilmore reveals that the city and its people exist inside the world conjured by His Voice. In a quiet moment, Joe and Fran discuss faith and purpose, while the camera reveals one of the angel skeletons perched in her living room as a chilling reminder of the forces at play.

The film closes on a haunting image: an angel skeleton lying on the Moon’s surface, a silent emblem of the mystery that binds these heroes to a cosmic consequence greater than themselves. The story leaves audiences with a sense of fragile hope and the suggestion that the line between reality and invention, memory and dream, may be thinner than it seems.
