Yogi [Daws Butler] leads his friends on a tour of the Spruce Goose, the famous Hughes H-4 Hercules aircraft built by billionaire Howard Hughes. The adventure begins with a mishap that leaves the group locked inside the plane, and the dome surrounding the massive craft seals for the night. Augie Doggie trips over a door, opening it and bringing the whole gang into the cockpit. In a surprising turn of events, Yogi accidentally pushes a button that magically activates the plane, and the crew soon finds themselves lifted from the dome, soaring into the open sky. To avoid a collision with a bridge, Yogi pulls back the wheel, and the Spruce Goose lifts off, cruising past the Long Beach skyline and narrowly avoiding a rendezvous with the Queen Mary Hotel. What started as a museum tour becomes a magical, transcontinental flight as the Goose heads toward new possibilities and unexpected destinations.
Their first radio update catches them off guard: a group of arctic animals is trapped near the South Pole, battered by a raging snowstorm and cut off from the open sea. Driven by a sense of goodwill and curiosity, the gang follows the call for help and soon encounter Bernice [Marilyn Schreffler], who had been part of the Spruce Goose tour with her mother before getting separated from them. Together, they set a course for the icy expanse, hoping to clear a path for the stranded creatures. The mission hinges on the Goose acting as an icebreaker, plowing through the frozen surface to carve a channel to the ocean. The rescue is successful, and the penguins are brought to safety, but danger isn’t finished yet.
As they navigate the treacherous waters, the penguins come under attack from sharks. The group rallies to defend them, with Quick Draw McGraw, in his alter ego El Kabong, attempting a rescue that proves more challenging than expected. Snagglepuss adds to the chaos by starting the plane’s propellers, which destabilizes the deck and sends the heroes sliding toward an ice floe. A mighty whale arrives, threatening the sharks and turning the tide in the crew’s favor, providing a dramatic display of nature’s sheer power and the Goose’s unexpected capabilities as a moving platform.
The adventure continues as the radio broadcasts reveal another crisis: a stranded ocean liner full of animals in the Zelman Sea, long after poachers abducted them and left them to die. Two aliens, shied away from an earlier invasion in Long Beach, attempt a second assault by disguising themselves as Earth animals to blend in. The gang races to the rescue and manages to fend off the aliens once more. They attempt to tow the ship, tying ropes to the hull, but the doors open and water begins to flood the vessel. Quick Draw McGraw as El Kabong takes a personal shot at rescuing the passengers, but progress remains slow. Bernice discovers a crucial solution: using the Spruce Goose itself as a makeshift bridge and cargo carrier, a capability born of its original wartime design. However, locating the doors proves tricky because the plane’s nose had been altered since its historic flight years earlier. Ultimately, the doors are found and opened, letting the stranded animals board the Goose. They chart a path to a nearby island where they can drop the rescued cargo safely, noticing the word “HELP” carved in the sand—a sign that someone else on the island is in need of rescue.
While the crew begins a search party, a lurking presence watches from the bushes. It is Mumbly, who has crashed on the island along with the Dread Baron. Mumbly awakens the Dread Baron and informs him of the Spruce Goose’s location and how it could be used to achieve wealth and power. The Dread Baron, sensing an opportunity, recognizes Bernice’s presence and devises a plan to board the Goose and seize control. Yogi offers a mercy test: if the would‑be invaders can return a bird’s egg to its nest, proving they want to reform, he will take them aboard. The pair succeeds, and the crew grants them a chance to rehabilitate themselves, even as the plans for conquest simmer in the back of their minds.
Back on the Spruce Goose, the two would‑be conquerors stage a show of hospitality—only to reveal a trap in the cargo hold. They imprison the gang and seize control of the plane, setting their sights on a destination long sought: the island of Moolah Moolah. There, the natives worship an idol that resembles the Dread Baron, an idol they call Malagula. Posing as Malagula, the Dread Baron parachutes down to the ground and Para dives into a treasure‑hungry world. While the natives shower him with gold, the rest of the gang manages to break free from the hut and confront the impostor. As the volcano beneath Malagula erupts, the idol is cracked and the locals turn away from their worship, chasing the invaders back toward the plane.
In the midst of the chaos, Merkin and Firkin reappear, flying toward Moolah Moolah in an effort to mount another invasion. The Spruce Goose, now heavily laden with gold, begins to stall under the weight. Realizing they must lighten the ship, the crew pushes the gold outside, a move that complicates the plan for Dread Baron and Mumbly—especially when Mumbly manages to snag the parachute and escape, leaving Dread Baron to follow his own fate. As the Spruce Goose finally climbs back into the air, Mumbly becomes the new leader of the would‑be conquerors, with Dread Baron serving as his loyal sidekick.
The Goose returns to Long Beach, where the dome home awaits. The following day, Yogi and his friends bid farewell to Bernice and her mother. As they drive home, radio reports celebrate the rescues at the South Pole and the Zelman Sea, but the details remain a mystery to most listeners. Yogi, however, claims to know exactly how it all happened, and he and the gang cheer for the Spruce Goose, content in the knowledge that their unlikely voyage brought help to those in need and reminded them of the power of friendship, courage, and a little unexpected magic.
