Eli and Danny decide to spend another New Year’s Eve together, embracing their identity as social outcasts. They frequent a video store where they bond with the manager, Garrett, and attempt to enjoy their evening despite the threat of harassment from local punks.

At a convenience store, Eli and Danny encounter Laura and her friends, who are caught attempting to steal alcohol. Laura invites Eli to the party they're headed to, igniting hope in Eli's heart for a potential New Year’s kiss.

Eli and Danny arrive at the party, overwhelmed by the throng of their schoolmates, including their rival, Chris. Danny embarrasses Eli with a story about a mix-up involving his drink, leaving Eli feeling frustrated with his friend.

As the clock strikes midnight, everyone at the party shares kisses except for Eli, who feels isolated while watching Chris kiss Laura. This moment marks the peak of Eli's heartache as he wrestles with unrequited feelings.

Suddenly, the party descends into chaos when Laura's friend screams, revealing a horrific accident involving her boyfriend. Panic ensues as electronic appliances begin to attack the partygoers, leading to a series of gruesome incidents.

In the ensuing chaos, Eli, Laura, and their friends hide in Chris's garage. As they confront Farkas, the group is attacked by a robot made up of appliances, resulting in Danny's tragic death as he heroically tries to protect his friends.

Heartbroken over Danny's death, Eli and the remaining group seek refuge in the woods at a hideout owned by Laura’s ex-boyfriend, Jonas. They encounter Garrett and his group, “The Collective,” who offer condolences to Eli.

The group discovers Eli's personal computer, which has inexplicably gained sentience. Attempting to hack it for assistance, they face a dangerous situation when the computer captures Laura, forcing Eli to confess his feelings to save her.

As the night unfolds, Eli observes Jonas trying to win Laura back, drowning his hopes for a romance with her. Meanwhile, the group narrowly escapes an attack from the appliance robot, raising their spirits for a fightback.

The group arrives at the high school where survivors gather under machine control. Eli delivers a motivational speech only to struggle with conflicting emotions as they confront the bug controlling the machines, leading to a desperate mission.

Eli and Laura manage to locate the mainframe of the bug. After facing electrical jolts and intense pressure, they cleverly wrap Danny's condom around the kill code, enabling them to shut down the machines and save humanity.

With the machines defeated, Eli reunites with his parents and honors Danny’s bravery by revealing to his mother that her son died a hero. He also solidifies new friendships with Laura, CJ, and Ash as they look forward to a new chapter.

Five years later, Eli, Laura, and Ash visit Danny’s grave to pay respect. Eli leaves his friend's favorite action figures, connecting their past with their hopeful futures as they prepare to graduate college.

As they leave the grave site, Ash’s iPod glitches, and the sinister face of the bug reappears, showcasing that the threat might not be entirely vanquished. This twist serves as a haunting reminder of the night’s chaos and Danny's sacrifice.
