Nives, a peasant girl deserted by smuggler Gino Lodi, betrays him to the police. Officer Enzo Cinti, who loves her, finds her working in cane fields to support herself and her son and warns that escaped Gino seeks revenge. She refuses his help. Gino discovers Nives mourning their drowned child, surrenders, and walks beside her in the funeral procession.
